What on EARTH is wrong with this version?!
Ok, so I have been playing Final Fantasy VI for a while now. I beat the SNES version and the Steam version and I seriously think that all these people are whining their @sses off for nothing. Firstly, there's the battle UI. People say it's from the ios version, but SO WHAT? I find it easier to use than the snes UI. The magic is sorted into 3 categories instead of making me scroll through one giant list of random spells, and it has all the commands on one screen, instead of having the defend and flee commands hidden off to one side where most people would not think to look if it was their first time playing. Secondly, the graphics. The bilinear filter is just the most petty excuse to not enjoy the game, because it is so easy to remove, and removing it even removes the tile seams. The colors are a lot better and more vivid. Also, people keep raging about the character sprites and how they "don't remain loyal to the original version", but I completely disagree. When I saw the sprites for the first time, I knew instantly:"Hey! That looks like Tera from FFVI!", and I didn't have any problem with the new sprites. Lastly, people complain about antialiasing problems, but LOOK AT THE DESERT BACKGROUND AND ESPECIALLY THE WORLD MAP on the SNES version and it has all the same issues. Seriously. This is clearly the absolute best version of FFVI.

Completely disagree that this is the best version. That is just insane to me. Hands down I would play the snes version over this. The sprites are the only thing that's bothering me but they're bad enough and so completely out of place from the rest of the art style that I can't play this version. If someone ever finishes a conversion to the original or very similar sprites I'll play it, but until then there are other, far better options than buying this version of the game.

I've never played FFVI, but I was thinking about buying this steam port. The complaints about the sprites are making me not want to buy it.

You say the sprites are bad, but what else do you expect? 4K High Definition FFXV graphics? It's a remake of a 16 bit SNES game. Be realistic here.

I miss the sort of dreariness to the visuals of the SNES version, but really, with a few minor mods, this version is not bad at all. Defilter at the very least, and it feels pretty good. The battle UI isn't bad, imo.

But really, I've played the SNES version so many times, that I was interested to play a tweaked version with a different style. I guess I'm just open to it now, to spice up a game I've played so many times.

I don't own it but it looks fine to me, I've been extremely confused by all the hatred for the art.

At first, at least while watching gameplay videos, I hated the sprites of the chars, but after playing the game, they doesn't only seems to match the SNES/GBA versions of the game, but also the Portraits, which matches the GBA version of the game, also matches the characters sprites.

Those people who are complaining about this port, is probably because they begun playing, didn't found the game familiar to what they met on consoles, and then gave a bad review to it.

I've play original FF6, original FF5 and for FF4's sake, the 'superior' version.

From my experience... People find the pettiest little thing to whine about and whine. There is NOTHING wrong with the Steam Final Fantasys.

Graphics? All these FF's are pixal games; it's VERY hard to downgrade.
Gameplay? Yep. Zuzu still kicked my ass in FF6. There's a Hard Mode for FF4. FF5 just ain't hard.
Music? I will never understand people's problem with this... I won't get started with it.
Specifically, Sprites. Seriously, don't ♥♥♥♥-talk the sprites. The ORIGINAL guy remade them. (For FF5 at least.)

tl:dr People whine about the port instead of enjoying the game even though the ports don't have any REAL problems.

Actually, this port of the game is a lot better than V port, V was so bad that I even had to refund, It gave crashes, the artwork of the characters were ugly, and didn't even fit the dialogue box, aswell as sometimes It didn't even booted, opened a hidden game window which even resists when trying to close it through the task manager.

Not true, FF4's port to steam was a port of a port. It was FPS locked to stupidly low frame rates. FF6 is a poor port of the GBA version with worse graphics and bugs that weren't even in the GBA version. I doubt FF5 faired any better.

And yet they managed to do so by using garbage mobile sprites that clearly do not belong and making the game more bright and cheerful which is in complete contrast with the originals

Considering a large part of Final Fantasy is the musical scores butchering or otherwise ruining the music people are expecting to hear is a great way to ruin the game. I mean if I'm in the opera scene and instead of playing the opera song it plays some chipper upbeat chocobo theme or some generic moody atmospheric tune when I'm expecting the specific song which was made for that specific scene is a great way to ruin the mood.

Well this isn't FF5, this is FF6 and even if the original guy worked on the sprites or not that doesn't change the fact that they are diametrically different from the theme and feel of the game.

tldr:People actually like their port jobs to be good, not butchering the game for some unknown reason.

I have to agree this port is crap. The sprites look like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ mobile game. Hands down I'd take the SNES version or even the GBA version over this. Just looking at the screenshots on the store page make my eyes sad. If someone ever manages to convert everything back to the way it should be I'll actually consider buying the game.
Stolas Dec 28, 2017 @ 4:35pm
But, Seriously, it ain't that hard to download and emulate the original games if you're that buggered. I choose not to, because all these run signifigantly better AND it supports the people who actually MADE these games.
