Wish they translated from Espers to Eidolons in FF6.
Just makes more sense if they wanna go with the original script. If you want source. FF4 and FF6 are both called Genju in Japan. Eidolons i think is greek legend something that is dead phantom beasts. Ergo Genju literally means Phantom Beasts.

The Espers or their ancestors were originally human though, so Esper makes sense. By coincidence, I just saw the Star Trek episode in which evolved superhumans are called espers.

It doesnt though. According to internet "Espers means someone that controls telepathy or supernatural ability"

An eidolon is basically invisible that is a beast. Like thats what those summons are called in FF games. And it didnt really get fixed til FF9 came out i think

Invisible that is a beast? I have no idea what that is supposed to mean. Your quote reinforces what I meant though. It's interesting they were the same word in Japanese, but the ones in FFVI were human or had human ancestors.

Well Phantom means "Something you cant see" to be more specific. Thats what summons in FF games kind of works like. They show up... Makes all kind of havoc to your enemies and then leaves

Your topic has taught me they changed the Ultima Weapon to Caladbolg in FFX for some reason. I suppose we may never know why that was changed. For the original English release though, Esper is a shorter word and probably saved quite a bit of valuable space, since English text takes up more data than Japanese.

If you mean "Lack of space" then i can see your point.. interms of back then due to limitations. But its not like that now though

As for FF10 i havent played it yet. But wiki says Ultima Weapon atleast
https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Ultima_Weapon_(Final_Fantasy_X)

But if you mean this
https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Caladbolg

Maybe they just wanna have a special name for a sword. But i can see what you mean

I remember reading somewhere that esper was actually kind of like ESP'er , or that is where the term originated. Which is cool to me for some reason. Like someone derp over some script while drinking their morning coffee and just derped out "esper" after seeing ESP'er. Sounds like something an Onions would do.

It's a word, and there is no apostrophe.

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/esper

Interesting that the origin isn't ESP though. Like you, I thought it was derived from ESP as well.
Instead: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/esperar#Old_Occitan

Actually this says it's indeed from ESP:
https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Etymology:Esper

And holy smokes, the Babylon 5 character was obviously named after that guy.

Esper sounds way better, it has a wispy magical quality to the way it sounds. I hated how they called them eidolons in FF9 and always wished they returned to being called espers. I couldn't care less about the original japanese meaning and it's relation to an ancient greek word. Same thing with the name Terra being infinitely better than Tina.
