Encounter rate ruins the game
Is it really me that rage quitted cause of getting encounter every 5-10 steps? I am not kidding, i swear to my lovely life. How can i enjoy this if i get in battle after moving my character 7 steps? Again and again and again and again and again and again and again. This is ridiculous and destroys all the fun of the game. I never had this problem on FF7, FF9, FF10. I have spend tons of months playing these games, especially FF7 and FF10. But in FF6 looks like it is really an issue. Is it only me who feels like this? Do people enjoy getting encounter in 5 steps any time? You can't enjoy exploration this way. There are also no in game features to disable encounters. There is only molulu charm which is pointless in places that you have to split your party and another relic that reduces them by 50%. This is the best that the game can offer.

If anyone knows a mod or a cheat or a trainer or a save editor to modify this, please feel free to tell me. I am not looking for something to make my characters gods, like infinite HP and stuff like this. This is not fun too. Just a small feature adjusting the encounter rate will be nice.

You only played the post-PS1 Final Fantasies and you're complaining?

Real Johnny Come-Lately this one...

I remember having this high of an encounter rate on the SNES, especially later in the game.

Use Mog's Amulet later in the game and it stops all encounters period. There are relics that can also reduce encounters.

Until the very end, in Dragon's Den, I hated it too, it's just too high to allow exploration. I tried with a speedhack at first, but even with that and autobattle/running from everything in LLG I got bored eventually.

So yes, there are cheat engine tables to either disable the encounters directly, or give yourself more Molulu's Charms (and force them on characters that normally couldn't equip them). This also kinda kills the game for the opposite reason, but it's the lesser of two evils in my opinion. Ain't no way to play this at normal speed with that kind of encounter rate, not for me anyway.

Molulu's Charm does wonders for you, if you dislike the high encounter-rate. But to be fair, that is kinda what the original game was like. At least now you have the option to walk diagonally. Just imagine the walk up to Vargas on Mount Kolts only able to walk in four directions and getting a ton of random encounters. Or in Final Fantasy IV...let's just not talk about the Tower of Babel. And even in Final Fantasy I there are fixed 'random' encounters or even an entire section of a dungeon that gives you a random encounter every step.

Also don't forget that at certain points in the game, there is a difficulty curve that will give you problems if you didn't level up properly. Also depending on where you are in the game the high encounter-rate is needed to...let's say help you in certain areas on learning something

You're looking at this from the wrong perspective to be able to enjoy it. You're right, of course. From our modern perspective, it is too high. Back then, though? When that was a new and goregously graphiced game, where most of the excitement was given to us by those very random battles that now frustrate you (and probably me at this point if I'm being honest) it seems...too much. The playstation era is when games started holding our hands and making life easier for us in order to entice more nongamers to game. The gamers back then wouldn't have had it any othrer way, though. But it worked. It alienated some old school gamers, but it brought in many, many more "casuals". People like you are now playing games. I've also changed over the years from being one of those older-style gamers to being a gamer more like yourself. Games were different back then, yo.

TL;DR Yeah, it's too high from a modern perspective. Games used to be that way. It was an aspect that provided excitement, but it hasn't aged well.

I am not saying that it is hard. I am saying that it is annoying. It destroys any kind of exploration that the game can offer. Even if you know exactly where you have to go, to get all the treasure in a dungeon, you still get pissed off by encounter rate. Don't tell me that you like getting encounter every 7-8 steps. It is really so much annoying. Maybe this game isn't for me anymore. It is a very clear difference on this game, because on later final fantasy games, i never had an encounter rate problem. I always found it well designed. It is not that makes the game harder this way. It just makes it more annoying and boring.

Then use Cheat Engine and give it another go. It's an easy fix, and you'll get to experience the game, at least in part. Better than just giving it up anyway.

Are you not reading anything anyone is saying lol. The game came out in 1994 and almost every JRPG from that time has an encounter system just like this. Unless this is your first game like this EVER what did you expect?

Actually, most JRPGs back then weren't that bad. The zones were too small to typically cause such frequent battling between areas. One of the most notorious from the FF series for speedrunning was FF9 due to the high encounter rate and even it wasn't particularly that bad (due to zones being small enough to run through before a battle occurred. There are definitely some that did have high battle frequency and some, like Legend of Dragoon, that would randomly have very high battle rates and other times very low rates (mostly due to area) but it wasn't typical for JRPGs.

OP, as others said there is the way to negate random encounters once acquired. As for this game, IIRC (its been a while) I don't remember it having much to explore so you can pretty much just run straight to your objective. Alternatively, does the PC version offer a speed hack to speed up combat? Cheat engine might be a possibility if you want to modify encounter rate as well.
Dovahhkiin64 Feb 25, 2020 @ 7:40pm
Those random encounters are needed. Without all those encounters you wouldn't be able to get all the abilities you want from the Veldt for Gau and Strago. Also they help you grind faster with all those high xp monsters, and those high value monsters can have awesome items to steal like genji gloves and ribbons.
Captive Mind Feb 25, 2020 @ 8:41pm
I get your frustration but understand that these games are smaller than their universes make them out to be, and without the encounter rates you'd feel like you run out of things to explore more quickly.
