Naysayers of this version, remember the PSOne version and it's bad translation?
They butchered the game. How can one be translating a game and make a mistake like Y Burn? And there are numerous L/R gobblygoo moments too. That's only the tip of the iceberg. I mean, ok, Aepyornis gets butchered to Epiolnis in FFVII, but that's a hard one to get (ancient bird genus, not a mythological creature), though they mixed up Chimera & Harpy and couldn't spell Chimera, either as Chimera or Khimaira, but as sloppy as some games were, FFV took the cake. It was the sloppiest translation I've ever seen. RPGe was more competent and professional in the translation than Square's official release. Likewise for FFII & FFIII's 1998 releases online. I played all 3 and I was amazed at how FFII & FFIII's fan translations were better than official FFI & FFII/IV's. FFV on PS1 left a lot to be desired. I waited for it since I saw it talked about as Final Fantasy Extreme in EGM or something and was disappointed when it kept getting cancelled. FFV on PS1 was the first time I played it and I was very disappointed in the translation, the slow load times, and the random freezes.

Besides Y Burn (Wyvern) & Dinglberry (Tonberry), we have some gems like:
- Antolyon instead of Antlion. How can one possibly get this wrong?
- Apprehender instead of Apanda.
- Auspices instead of Aspis. How does the line go in that REM song? Save Egypt from the Horrible Auspices? Guess they never heard of an Asp.
- Aquazone. Isn't that an aftershave?
- Bald Money. And they don't even resemble John Quincy Adams...
- BigButrfly... it's a bird.
- Bludgeoner instead of Sekhmet. When in doubt, just name up a name, like Apprehender.
- Brand Lamia. Lamia gotta be fashionable.
- Centipeeler (what is it, an orange-centipede hybrid?) instead of Ankheg or Anku Heggu.
- Clay Claw instead of Cray Claw. Guess they never had seafood.
- Cockataur instead of Cockatrice.

- Cool Dust instead of Crew Dust. Black cloud... if they were to garble it, they didn't even come up with Coal Dust?
- Cybis instead of Sea Ibis/Sea Avis.
- Deem Master.
- Fins instead of Sahagin. I guess we can be pretty sure they never looked at another FF game.
- Hypnot instead of Bandercoeurl. Yeah, they just made that one up.
- Karl Boss instead of Karlabos.
- Maximus instead of Gorgimera. When in doubt, just make up a name.
- Magnities. The other versions spelled it Magnetes, Magnetite. They probably don't even know how to spell magnet.
- Paddle Thru instead of Padosule/Pas de Seul. Only enemy in FF whose name invokes canoeing.
- Shell Fish... for a slime named Gel Fish.
- Shoat instead of Catoblepas. Yeah, they played FFVI, but Catoblepas would fit.
- Soccer instead of Sucker.
- Stoker instead of Stalker.
- Stoned Mask. Gotta admit, this one is funny.
- Succubus instead of Wyrm. Just one of their many odd choices.
- T-Wrecks. Are they trying to be witty or are they just that stupid?
- Verminator. Must've been fans of Married... with Children. Same goes for Baretta instead of Bulette. And that was before Robert Blake was involved in the murder trial.
- Zefa Zone. Guess they never heard of Zephyr.

And translation garbage that showed they couldn't even be bothered to get the name right, like Belfegel (instead of Belphegor), Corral (Coral), Ferry Walk, Halycanos (Halicarnassus. Could've been contracted to Halycarnasus or some variant of that), Hyudra & Aquaus (for Hydra. No 'Hydra' in the game), Glastos (Grass Tortoise/Turtle), Ion (Iron), Money Mage, Mammom (Mamon), Mellusion (Melusine), Mottletrap (Motor Trap), Trent (Treant). Gilgame was actually a good name.

I kinda like the Golem in the last dungeon of the 2nd world [hehehe].

There is one good thing about the PSX translation - It's fun to make fun of.

Random freezes? Game didn't freeze once on me on the PS1 or PS2. You sure you didn't play it on the PS3?

Anyway, I didn't think the translation was that bad at all. The grammar was good enough and there weren't a whole lot of typos. Just normal squeezed-in text for the era and name changes. I think you'll only notice the "bad translation" if you do a lot of internet research on the original, and at that point, you're just nitpicking.

You know what the PS1 version also had? Faris speaking like a pirate. It gave the most personality to it's characters, which made it charming.

She speaks like a pirate in this one too... even makes some nice corny pirate jokes. <_< She did that in the Japanese version too.

No one's disputing that the PS1 port was bad. This port is also bad, for different reasons.

We actually have a dude in another thread who's been fighting tooth and nail to claim it was a perfect version of the game lacking any issues.

Many of us disagree with the claims that this is a bad port, and honestly the only claims about why are either things that they'll fix in a patch (bugs and errors) or are entirely subjective (art taste and localization choices). It's really hard to claim this version is not the best version they've put out to date without a lot of work or attempting to blackmail anyone talking sense (someone actually tried this).

I honestly don't get the fervor, though I do get the confirmation bias brought about by initial exposures.

Who even remotely equivocated that besides you? The point is that there's people trying to claim the PS1 version was flawless (and therefore superior somehow) when it was a bugged mess. That's all.

Actually, the way a person talks says a LOT about their personality.

I'm not saying the way Faris talked wasn't completely over the top and silly, but frankly, it suited the nature of the game. FFV has one of the less serious storylines of the series, leaning on a lot of silly tropes, coincidences, and general nonsense to give the heroes a reason to continue along ther path. Even the nature of the crystals granting the heroes the power of "Jobs" isn't explained very well.

It was the game that brought us Gilgamesh, after all, a boss who is a joke by his very nature.

No, it really, really didn't. Having a character who constantly celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day is something that twists a story from "lighthearted" to "straight comedy."

That's what Crystals do, and it was never explained in even the more serious games. Welcome to Final Fantasy.

Which ones, exactly?

We know what Materia are and why they do what they do.

We know what Magicite is and why they do what they do.

We know what Guardian Forces are and why they do what they do.

We know what Rydia's summons do, and we even know where they come from.

We know what Yuna's summons are and what they do.

In FFV it's just sort of "The dead crystal gave us random classes because it wants us to save the world." It's on the "Final Fantasy XIII-2" level of nonsense. I suppose you could consider it a facet of the Job system itself, though. Bravely Default is even the same way, come to think of it.

A character straight changing everything about themselves at a whim is a silly concept to begin with.

I'm just saying the original is better in general (i finished the gba version), there are flaws but new port should improve that, not making it worse. Why trading everything good for a better translation, it should be better in everything overall.

People are talking about loading times, which got fixed in this port (I remember ff5 ps1 was fine though), because guess what, we are living in 2015, loading was a problem in the past, now? It shouldn't be a problem.

Comparing the flaws of the past can be forgotten since there is a new one. But the new port isn't great either sadly.

The only parts of this port that are worse than the other versions are purely aesthetic. The gameplay tweaks and additions more than make up for visible tilesets and questionable dialogue sprites.
