In the original game, her sprites didn't emphaise her chest, and there was no portrait art to go with the dialogue, Faris' sprite has the same shape as Lenne's does in this game though, making it obvious right from the start that she is a woman.

https://finalfashionista.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/faris_artwork.jpg <--- Right off the bat, her sprite proportions match up with the female models, and its emphasises even more in the job outfits.

http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Final_Fantasy_V_Job_Sprite_Images <--- Here's all the job sprites. You'll noticed a big difference between how the SNES and iOS sprites represent Faris.

The original sprites and art left it ambiguous enough that you easily could have mistaken her for simply being an efeminate man, but the portrait art in this game is incredibly feminine, to the point that you would instantly assume it was a girl.

because apologists have bad logic. I knew she was a woman when I first played it on psx. not only does it say it in game, it says it in the cgi of the playstation version. And they didn't have to say it for it to be known.

...what? Yes it says it in-game... when you find out.

Ah OK. I wanted to go into FF blind so I didn't have a look at the original games =)

It sucks they didn't try to mask it better. Making Faris look so obviously female right from the start completely defeats the point of the reveal when it actually happens.

In the original, there's only a handful of her job outfits that even suggest it, and those aren't given to you until long after the reveal.

Even her picture when it cuts to her talking makes her look like a woman. What really bugs me is that 1. When you're in the pub in the village, Bartz and Galuf pretty much announce it, and 2. There is literally an achievement that says on it "Find out Faris is a woman"... They could at least have the name marked as a spoiler.

I believe the original writer was never really trying too hard to make it unclear to the viewer, just the characters, hence the overly comic way it's approached. Hardly a reveal like the first Riddick movie or anything.

That being said, there's a lot of things in combo they could have done to do a better job of it, but I think they decided since it gets revealed so early in the game, that they would rather enhance her aesthetic than work hard at masking it.

According to her portrait, she wears a coat that can not really tell she is a woman, covering her shape.
Remember Bartz saw her in her room with, I believe, her hair free. Pirates would never enter their captain's room.

I was about to make a similar post. If anything, Bartz is the one that has an ambiguous look to his character portrait. Faris is pretty obviously female.

Gorgeous according to Bartz and Galuf.
Actually, she looks really sexy in her Sorcerer job ! :D

The other one is still there. I have both. You get one for finding out Faris is female and another for finding out much later on her real name and identity. That one I got after getting to the Earth Crystal.
