BUTZ
I only played the game for a couple hours a few year ago but I remember one thing: The first character you got was named Bartz.

So instead of making jokes about how Bartz rhymes with farts we can now make fun of how he's named after where poo comes from.

I don't really see a problem with what name they go with. I just found it odd that the video gives him one name and the screenshots give another. Probably a lack of communication in some form or another responsible for it and nothing else, really. If it were a more popular title, I'm sure something like that wouldn't have happened. FFV has had pretty limited exposure in the US compared to a lot of the rest of the series. I'd likely still just name the guy Bartz, even if it's Butz in the release, as I just find it odd to call a guy "Butts."

And it will always be Aeris to me. I didn't even know that it was 'supposed' to be Aerith until FFIX was about to come out, so it had sunk in by then.

Difference with this and Aeris/Aerith thing is that there's not even a debate about it. Bartz has always been the official name for the character (I have no idea why that video says Butz, but it's probably a mistake) and Butz came from mistranslation in a fantranslation. Aeris on the other hand was Aeris in both the first official English release of Final Fantasy VII and in Final Fantasy Tactics (where she has a cameo). It was still a mistranslation, but it was a mistranslation in multiple official releases so it's at least more understandable why some people want to stick with that. Butz is just not correct, even if you grew up with it. It didn't come from Square Enix.

So yeah, apparently we are back to that debacle, but there really is no reason for it.

Of course Aerith was the official romanhization long before the mistranslation, so there's that too.
As I said above I have no idea if there was an official one for the main character of FFV, but that doesn't mean that just because the English language games have had it all as 'Bartz' that it's always been that way.
(Incidently, and I'll grant this was over 16 years ago, I remember people calling him Butz well before the fan translation ever came out. Of course they also called the 14 year old girl 'Kururu' as that is her name...)

His name is and always has been Battsu -> Bartz in official releases. Whoever made it Butz in the trailer goofed. But worth mentioning, a similar name, Gattsu from Berserk, was officially translated as Guts. So it could be Buts just as well. But they went with Bartz.

It's just the matter of what they intended in the first place. Both Battsu (バッツ) and Gattsu (ガッツ) are just a way to spell the name Bartz and the English word Guts with Japanese katakana. They most likely always intended it as Bartz and then wrote that in Japanese as close as possible, which came out as Battsu. (And that's definitely the case with Guts).
It's not like Cloud's original name is "Kuraudo" either, it's just that クラウド is the only way to spell the English word "cloud" in Japanese.

(You probably knew all that but there but some people seem to be confused about the whole naming thing so I explained it just in case)

No I just think the name of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ BUTZ is stupid. Come on you went from Bartz to Butz.

The original name was Butz btw.

It's not, though. His Japanese name is Batsu, which literally means Punishment. I don't see why they didn't just keep him as Batsu, but I think Bartz is probably a decent romanization for it. Better than Tina > Terra anyway.
Even Dante isn't that edgy, jeez.

Yup.

Think this is just SE having a bit of fun introducing him as Butz.

Bartz will most likely me his default name in game.

It's not that edgy though, because it's not exactly correct. The word is batsu (罰) and his name is written Battsu (バッツ)
Gosen Sep 12, 2015 @ 2:38am
There's no any name for main hero, when I was playing this game the player had to choose it, so for me it was Eikichi.
Keytee Tamira Sep 12, 2015 @ 2:56am
Tina is better than Terra...
Because it's the ORIGINAL name.
Imagine if someone said that Billy, Dilly and Willy are better names for those ducklings rather than Huey, Dewey and Luey (Billy, Dilly and Willy are their russian names)
Lvl1. Slime Sep 12, 2015 @ 3:12am
What name is better is purely opinion. I prefer Terra myself as Tina sounds bland and, well, normal. I play RPGS to escape normality. ;)

And as Gosen said, you pick the name of the main character, although that may have been changed at some point.

Either way, who cares about translation, Romanisation, this, that and the next thing? You either like a name or not. XD

Well, how would you felt if you knew that we Russians, call Huey, Dewey and Luey, a Billy, Dilly and Willy?
Gosen Sep 12, 2015 @ 6:32am
You forget that translation of names for Snes games is impossible due to character limit, so lot of names are completely different than original, that's why I've been playing old Finals in Japanese, although names of cities/characters were impossible to remember for me with unknown romanization, but I didn't care, I remembered places/characters by their looks and features an original names if possible. Names of FF6 characters are so different in US version, that I haven't even tried to play it anything but original.
