Stuck at Moogle Village

Not sure if it's a glitch or I'm just stupid. I did things in this order: went to the house on the right, didn't open the chests. Went to the middle house, grabbed the Moogle custume. Went to the house on the left, swooned the Moogle for their locked chest. Went back to the house on the right, grabbed all the chests. Now, it's my understanding that moogle is supposed to wait for me outside and climb his tree, triggering the next event.... problem is, I can't get the event to trigger. Is this game now ruined?

It's almost certainly not a bug since people run into this all the time. I'm not looking it up right now, however if I recall you need to go outside to the world map or something, or sleep or something.

Tried both. Tried even going back to the previous town and staying at the inn.

You must talk to the moogle you followed (the one with the treasures), if you don't talk to it then you he won't go outside and be able to trigger the next cutscene...

I did. It keeps gesturing to let me take the stuff in the chests. Problem is, I already have.

I'm having this same issue too. Playing the GBA version, I got all of the items out of the rightmost hut, put in the moogle suit, then got the chest in the left house. The moogle in the rightmost hut just keeps gesturing for me take the stuff in the now empoty chests...

i went out side the village and slept with a tent then went back and talked to him again. after that i thought i was caught too, but i tried to leave the village again. as i was about to exit i heard a door open, and i went back to find him standing outside. the event then triggered when i talked to him. maybe if you leave as i did not he goes back in his house. my guess listen for the sound when you approach the exit.

A few things in this game are on timers instead of regular event flags, remember. You may have just had to wait outdoors for a bit.
