Can't get to the floating city

Title says it all.

In the original, you could use arrow up or down to make the airship go the flying city.
In this version Cid tells you to press X, but that only brings up the map..
Anyone got past this point?

Are you coming to a complete stop? There are other topics about a spoiler later in the game with a similar control issue. I don't remember the exact key that worked if it wasn't "X," but I am finding another topic about the other issue in which it is coming to a complete stop in exactly the right spot and hitting "X."

If you're using an Xbox controller, then try hitting the RB (R1 on a PS controller). I'm pretty sure the "hit X" thing is just carried over from the SNES version.

it means the "x" on your keyboard
default controller is the keyboard so all references to controls in game is your keyboard
