Could have they made the sprites uglier and even more different than the character portraits?
5 minutes into the game and I'm already annoyed. Not only they are super generic, they even got all color schemes wrong. A white haired dude has a brown hair. A white haired woman has pink hair and so on. I mean, I know they are cheap, but a simple hair color change in the sprites shouldn't have cost them any extra to be loyal to the character portraits. The only portrait loyal to the sprite, so far, is the chocobo's

Sprites were designed first. It's the character portrait art that wasn't loyal to the sprites.

You see the same thing in FF6 with Terra's hair.

Pretty sure Amano's concept art came first.

Bartz should be a bishie with lipstick, dangling earing and quite a low-cut shirt.

I just want to point out it wasn't because it was "cheap" they decided to make things look how they do. They even got the original sprite artist to do them. (Also, while the character art has a mixed reception, surely people appreciate how faithful the backgrounds and enemy sprites are? I love the spell animations too.)

While I understand Amano's work technically predates even the SNES sprites (which this game is faithful to) I much prefer the sprites over the "everyone is a bedazzled blond glam rock bishie with a low-cut shirt and a broken neck" concepts. Don't get me wrong, his monster art is amazing, but when it comes to human characters the guy is so samey.

Plus it was honestly pretty baffling that this release replaced the old portraits with ones that clashed so horribly with the actual game. Faris ends up having the least androgynous portrait out of the bunch, which is the exact opposite of what should be happening, lol.

It bothered me too. Fortunately, there is a download in the guides section for portraits that'll match the colors of the sprites in game.

And yeah, I also don't really like the original art. I've also never seen it used as official in game depictions of characters before and I thought it was weird. I know such character art gets made for most FFs but they don't use it in the actual games, the characters always end up looking much different in the actual games etc. For which I am glad...

So with that said, I just stick with this being how Bartz and some of the others look in Dissidia:

Not that you can change it in this game, but... it helps to know he doesn't actually look like something out of a horror movie.
