White Screen Crash on Startup
It's really sad that an issue this game has had since launch I'm still trying to troubleshoot 4 years later. I bought this on the Steam sale, and found that the game just refuses to launch. I've followed all the directions other users have given on threads I've found. The overriding high DPI settings in the .exe Properties fixed my initial problem of the game thinking it couldn't run in full screen, but now I just get a white screen for around 3-5 seconds and then it closes back out to the launcher. I've tried pretty much every option in the Compatibility settings, my Windows username does not have any non-standard English characters. (It's not connected to a Microsoft account either, it's just a local user, name "Tyler".) I've even tried moving it between my two different drives. (I have a fairly small SSD I don't usually save games on, it just has the OS.)

I'm out of things to try. It's more then a little disappointing to see a rather big issue at launch not even get a whisper of support from Square.

I had the same problem... and just discovered that it was because my controller (Dualshock XBOX 360) was plugged USB while trying to boot the game.

Start the game WITHTOUT any controller plugged and it should work

I tryed lot of times with and without the Controller to be sure. EACH TIME it was plugged i had the white screen. And EACH TIME it wasn't, it started like a charm. Hope it helps you)

I found later that even if ur controller is not plugged USB it can bug.. so watch out to not be plugged bluetooth. As soon as the game "detect" that there's a controller, it gives u the white screen of death.

Yeah. I have the same problem, and I just can't get this game to launch.

I had this issue. I went into the final fantasy directory and found the OpenGL.dll and change it to OpenGL.dll.bak (might be OpenGL32.dll).

Once I restarted the game this problem was fixed.

I was also having this issue myself. For a while simply restarting my computer and running the game right after startup was fixing it, but eventually it stopped, so that may have been a correlation vs causation thing there.

More recently based on reports that other bugs were more predominant when one attempted to play the game full screen I tried downloading Borderless Gaming (do a google search) and using it to run the game in a borderless window instead of normal full screen. Doing this seems to have fixed the issue for me, as I haven't had a crash in approximately a week.

I haven't tried Gin 'n Chris's OpenGL trick, as I'm afraid that any change I cause to the delicate equilibrium I've managed to achieve with the game will break it again, but I'm decently happy with the workaround I've managed.

For the record I attempted unplugging my X-Box controller like Human-Chaos suggested, and that had no affect on the game's stability one way or another for me, so I'm guessing that one may be a correlation / causation thing just like my restarting the computer was.

I just wanted to update this thread that I changed PC to laptop recently and could not load this game after. Checked all fixes I could find and contacted Square -Enix with no fix.

However, I got it running earlier with one adjustment that seemed crucial. If you right click the game in inventory in Steam, and under General-Steam Input Per Game Setting...change this to "Forced Off" and now game boots up like normal. Not sure if this will work for others but wanted to mention.

@matrix response concerning "forced off" was the correct solution. This needs to be posted at the top of the list of known issues. https://steamcommunity.com/app/382890/discussions/0/487870763294376234/?ctp=3

I had to jump through so many hoops to get this game to work.

If I were an executive involved in the decision to not patch this game, I'd probably do humanity a favor and kill myself.

Matrix - Thank you. I have been trying to fix this for like a year and this was the solution I'd been after.

This fixed my friend's game. Can confirm this is the fix.

This worked for me also on my Snapdragon X Elite laptop. Thanks heaps for the suggestion!

Glad my fix is still helping all these years later!

I'm not sure if they updated the game and removed this file, but I don't see any OpenGL files in the game folder in Steam's common folder. For someone who does have it, could you post your directory? Thanks
