The Orbs were Crystals in the PS1, GBA & PSP versions of FF1.
It's a trope for the plot. I believe the term is MacGuffin.
FF6 and onwards show more originallity for the plot and don't rely on Warriors of Light or Elemental Crystals. Dissida brings that back.
2 is different.
2, 6 and XII are very copy/paste from Star Wars.
The Crystals themselves typically have very little to do with the actual plot though, they are just standard FF affair that carries over from one game to the next.
XII is the Ivalice Legend series.
It's a huge clone of Star Wars. The characters are very similar to characters in A New Hope, and the music and theme is very Star Wars.
I haven't played 12 yet.
