On my first attempt i ran around and gathered everything. I had crafted a chest but it was still sitting in the worktable. When i tried to pick it up to place it i got "inventory full". With everything stuffed with plants and seeds which cant be stored in a stockpile. i could have eaten a stack of fruits to make room, but started a new game ^^.
If you have any seeds or inventory in your inventory then you can eat them to free up a slot. If you have a crafting table already, you could try crafting to free up space. Placing crafted items may help as well if you crafted other tables and such. It is important to then place a chest somewhere so that you always have a spot to place stuff.
IMPORTANT:
Keep in mind, as long as you have your starter crafting table accessible, you can ALWAYS create a chest. As it only takes Logs to craft, which goes into your Carry slot which can always be emptied as Carry slot items can be placed with right mouse button.
The ONLY time you won't be able to do this is if you are too hungry to work, inventory is full, AND you have no food in your inventory. Since you have to cut down a tree to get the logs afterall.
This is definitely a known feature request that we're looking at addressing.
