Composting

So i need compost for fertilizer and heared if you trow items with a green background (seeds/crops) on the ground and leave them they become compost so thats what i did.

It worked great for the top layer but everything below it became GARBAGE!!

Did i do something wrong or is it not working as intended?(cause im now stuck with a crap load of garbage)

Better use the waste filter they produce many compost by cleaning dirty water
