Digging for an elevator shaft.

I'm looking to build an elevator shaft deep underground to store my tailings, but I am a little stumped as to how to go about digging the hole, as I can't get back out to unload the rock/ore/stone/dirt, etc.
Any advice on how to do this?

You can use ladders as you are working your way down - just make sure you can get out with each load of stone, then put ladders down and repeat the process.
