It's not working when I try to make something on the basic crafting tables even when they're right next to the stockpile and have the ingredients.

You need to make sure the stockpiles containing ingredients or being outputs are linked by the person that created the crafting order.

Well I'm the one who placed them - you mean I have to link them manually? I thought my placing them linked them.

The links to storage are per person, so everyone creating work orders on them needs to link the storages, as the links of the person creating the work order are used.

But I'm playing a single player game. Do I still need to manually link the storages?

Storages should always be manually linked. Automatic linking only happens in specific circumstances (one requirement being the property being fully claimed) and can only provide a base value.
