Our 7.4 staging version of Eco includes some changes that should make hosting/joining a game with your friends much easier, in that you shouldn't have to deal with port forwarding or network setup or anything like that (aside from 3rd-party firewalls). I encourage you (and your friends) to register an account on http://www.strangeloopgames.com/eco/ and link your Steam accounts (https://imgur.com/a/eoHZC) so that you can download the Staging Beta 7.4.0 version from there.
To be clear, you are certainly able to just join and host games without having to set up a standalone server. The "connection failed" issue typically points to something in your network configuration preventing Eco from properly talking to the internet. The new version does some things that help streamline that process and make it so that you don't need to dig into network settings just to host a game.
