What Happened to Mining / Ores?
Hadn't played in 2 years. It used to be the lower you went the larger the deposits. Now ore deposits are few and far between. Making skid steers useless. There is no reason to get mining operations going in bulk like the real world.

Now you need to clear 10x more non ore per 1 ore you get. It just isn't fun anymore.

What am I missing? Did they nerf ore this badly?

It was changed with V10, with the reasoning being a few things that the devs have mentioned here and on discord:

-With the introduction of settlements, there was a concern that people could settle one area and be "set for life" regarding ore. The devs wanted to make it so that this was not the case.

-In order to introduce new blocks like peat and sulfur, a space needed to be carved out of the existing worldgen for them

-New mining tools were supposed to be introduced to make scaling of the resource acquisition over time more correctly reflect game progression

That being said, I agree that in its current state it's extremely tedious, and the new technologies introduced thus far (explosives and the tractor scoop) do not work well to synergize with these changes.
Just make the ores abundant. There is always more than enough resources underground. Nobody mines only under their own property. So far I see people with multiple claims so they can have farms in biomes or stores in town.

I still believe the amount of rock you need to clear to get to bedrock should be the reward of getting BIGGER deposits if you find them deep. So you can spend some time.
Are there any mods that can fix this?

It's a product of the worldgen configuration file, which is a bit hard to read, but you can change it. The easiest thing to do would be to get an old 9.x worldgen file, and then edit it to add sulfur and peat. Or, write a scripted command that you run after the world is created to add the sulfur and peat.

I don't know if anyone has publicly released such a file or mod.

some ore veins can be pretty big just mined out one with probably 10 stockpiles of iron ore
I do like the dynamite dynamic for sure. But this just isn't as fun as a miner as it used to be.
This is terrible now. Utterly useless. Skid steers are no longer useful for mining. There is NOTHING near bedrock. If you mine under water it is 100% basalt. So most of your mining will take place near the surface or mid ranges. All the bedrock mining is obsolete not.

i noticed that as well.
i ended up making crafting less costly so in turn i "doubled" my ore intake. wasn't in the mood to dive deep to edit files.

Yeah I only found skid steer useful for limestone and I guess sand in vanilla. Its sad. Maaaaaybe iron to an extent idk.

I don't get that choice on servers.

Thing is I like delving deep and mining down there.. I get large operations going but it isn't as fun .. I never wasted so much time tunneling in my life and so much useless rock to dispose of.

oh yeah i feel you then....which makes the biggest gripe is getting of the crap.
i opted into farming skill to make ponds using the stone. then i toss a stack of ponds as a trash bag in the ocean 😂 anyways, i see myself quitting soon. shame since it feel like they have the boiler plate for a solid game...but at the end of the day it's just another sad story of, "good idea, poor execution"

there are some good mods out there but they took the fun out of the mining profession

yeah, but the devs lose me when you have to rely on mods...cause who am i paying exactly? lol
At least make it a variable you can change like factorio where you choose the amount and concentration of ores before you generate the world.
Totally agree, they wrecked the mining aspect of the game.
Also allowing building on oceans, whats the point in boats.
Though that's another topic.
