- internet connection must be working, and any firewalls must allow traffic on the ports the game uses (port 3000 at least, there may be others)
- if you bought the game through Steam, Steam must be in online mode, and you must be signed into steam on an account that owns ECO. If you bought the game directly from SLG, you may need to sign into that account
- The Steam servers must be online (outages are very rare, but they would block the game) and so must the Strange Loop Games servers (outages are again rare, but they last longer than Steam outages when they happen, just because the company is smaller, and so has fewer IT people). Similarly, any firewalls or VPNs must allow traffic to Steam and to SLG.
I recall seeing a discussion on this forum about there being a problem with using the same Steam account to both authorise the server application and authorise a client connected to that server; I'll edit in a link if I can find it.
[Edit] I think this is the one I was thinking of. https://steamcommunity.com/app/382310/discussions/14/603019495810831302/
