Where's the Iron?

Am I right in thinking it's a pain to get it?
I'm thinking it's quite deep... but where?

Iron is generally surrounded by sandstone, but it can also be surrounded by granite. A good strategy could also be to look for any crushed iron ore at ground level, as there will almost always be some ore you can mine too. Hopefully you can get enough together to advance enough to make an iron rock drill. That will help you prospect.

I made a diagonal shaft in the desert, making shallow side tunnels here and there, and found a nice fat iron vein.
I have found Iron in the Jungle too, but it was VERY deep.

The desert has multiple layers that pretty much span the whole desert, it's really hard to miss if you dig deep and wide enough.
