inlet water pipe

built a steam engine...and need water inlet. so ran a pipe (reasonably long about 30 pieces) to the nearest rivers. but it wont work and says its disconnected, ive redone it about 3 times and moved it incase but no dice. i also found i may need a water pump...but thats locked behind my assembly line....which needs 1250w to power ....which needs the steam engine :P. i dont think i can fit 60 odd windmills..any help please......the last time i played this game there was no pipe physics except for chimneys (its been a while!)

mechanical water pump is made now by basic engineer which only use 20w

You need to start with a mechanical water pump, not an electrical one. The inlet pipe needs to be well under the water surface, and it may help to have the initial segment run horizontally rather than vertically. But it still won't work at all without a pump.
