when plants have no more room to grow/expand, they die because of overcrowding, the player has to dig up and monitor the dead plants and the distance between each other, but on the global level, ie the entire planet to prevent it from happening.
which of course is impractical - its pretty much wait for a update/fix tbh
i play solo so its much easier to manage space i guess, but i just planted beets 4x6 no spacing, everyone shows overcrowded and i lose 3-4 of them every planting-cycle... i can live with 20 out of 24 (especially if you skill gatherer for the appropriate plant). much more crucial are the soil properties imo > use a soil sampler which you can craft at the farmer table.
