Invite Friends?

Is it possible to invite Friends into my game without hosting or renting a Server? Can someone tell me whats the right way to play with friends?
I am asking because the way to play Minecraft wirth friends was not that easy is it in ECO better?
Also to mention we dont want to play on a public server

if you download the ecoserver in tools that way you can set up a lan connection for your friends to play with you (if they own the game)

Just invite someone through steam to your single player game.

I should mention that if you're having problems inviting people through Steam as Zenthar's answer suggests ("connection failed" errors, etc.), the Staging Beta 7.4.0 build includes changes that make the connection process a lot smoother and streamlined, in that you shouldn't have to mess with router or network settings (aside from third-party firewalls) just to play with friends.
