If you're on a busier server people like the flavored ashlar and mortared stone so things like granite, shale, etc are also useful and they're in different places.
Getting stuff to the market. Are you going to haul the stuff to the market, or you going to setup a shop and have people come to you to buy? Either way your gong to want easy access to the "town" where everyone is. If your to far away and or no good roads. no one is going to go out there to buy stuff unless they really want it. and no one is going to sell you stuff if they can sell it closer/easier. Nor are you going to want to lug your stuff to a town stall to sell if there are no good routes.
Neighbors. You dont want to plop down next to another miner if they are clearing the place out. Or they have the market covered there. Nore do you want to setup shop next to farmer. as your pollution will affect them, And you dont want to have to deal with a nagging farmer.
Whats going to be your specialty? Crushed/sand/Iron/Copper/Gold. Are you going to become a smelter too, or you plan on selling to a smelter or mason?
Now lets look at whats where.
Iron is in the desert.
Copper is in the high mountains.
Gold is in the high mountains/rainforest. (although generally I find gold right next to the copper).
Limestone is in the grasslands (although I find allot of it along desert coasts to the ocean).
Coal is in the wetlands.
Your also going to want a water source
Granted there is a low chance of everything being anywhere.
Ideally I look for a desert that is touching the ocean on one side and high mountains on the other side. Because then you have Iron and limestone easy access and not to far from copper and gold.
Now, generally speaking your going to go through more iron then anything else. so the desert is where you should be. And once you need gold and copper you can just take a truck to get it. Even setting up a small offsite system to create concentrate and only haul the concentrate back.
