Ore?
Does it exist? I can't find any to save my life but I find a ton of ore sand which isn't useful for getting the smelting book.

Could you maybe go back and check at which z-level(height coordinate) you found the copper and gold, respectively?
I personally haven't found gold yet, but copper and iron were situated around ~50, coal in the wetlands made it up to about 60 or even 70 in height.

So the gist of this thread is that you need to find ore, to build the ore prospecting tool?

And that relies on a copious amount of dumb luck in 1-3 player games?
In 1-3 player games i recommend to get the drill per admin command.

Desert,10-12 blocks below the surface of Sandstone. my 1-3 SP game, took a total of about 15 minutes to find it, most of which was excavating the mine itself. hit iron ore in about 15 minutes total, there seems to be a substantial vein .. at least enough to get me into the next tech level of tools.

Prospected a 1-3 player size world Boreal Biome from surface layer and down 72 blocks almost everywhere and no copper. Took forever. What do? :steamsad:

My biggest problem with ore is what an absolute grind it is to collect it while dealing with all the stone you create mining it. Even on tier two machines it takes SO long to deal with the stone, and even then what am I supposed to do with all of it? Every single person who is mining has the same issue with too much, so even making roads isn't too helpful since that's what literally everyone is doing to get rid of their stone too.

If I want to make something fun out of iron, I need to set aside a HUGE amount of time just to collect it and deal with the mess. Too much time is my point. With the amount of iron necessary we really need to see these ore nodes that are supposed to exist become more common. I have yet to find one and there is no easy way to look for them either. Every stack of iron I get comes with 10 stacks of stone. It's not fun, and is very detrimental to a smaller group trying to play.

I dug with a friend for 4 hours straight now, and did not find any ore whatsoever. :(
