Block dimensions
are each block 1 meter by 1 meter?

The exact scale is hard to determine, but no. if each block was one meter people would be much larger on the screen than they are, wouldnt they?

They are, but curving the world actually makes some blocks a bit smaller than they seem to be, you just don't notice that.
