i think they changed the water physiks because water doesn't flow at all, some on our server dug up the beach for sand and the water is just standing there like a wall.
i even tried to build a dam but even if you close up a river the water level on both sides doesn't change.
if you have a upgraded kickstarter account, you get direct access to the Devs and source code, they do not watch these or their own forums regularly, I have attached a screenshot of this option on the official ECO website.

For esthetics we attempted to divert some water to a inland pond with homes built along the creek. It did exactly what the OP reported years ago. It behaves oddly, doesn't flow into inad ravines or remap itself to the adjusted terraform.
Anyone have any ETA on this? And yes, I know it's still in "Early Access"
