How to retrieve a cart

So that little wooden cart, I don't want to waste it. But after failing to climb one block inclines I tried to use the aqautic option, which has left my cart barely close enough to the surface to interact with it. How should I retrieve it?

Empty the contents of the cart, and then pick it up and place the cart in your inventory. I can't recall off the top of my head which key did this.

I wasn't that much into carts, but a friend of mine would always carry his empty cart to the worksite, then put it down, fill it, and push it back home. Since he could be faster going to the location with the cart in his backpack lol.

They also managed many cart rescues in this manner.

yea ive been able to retrieve all the resources, but its just that trying to hold left click (usually my pick up button) doesnt seem to work

hard to do that when i get just under a second to interact with the cart
