EDIT: (and dirt ramps, but that dies about 4 days in)
I was parking them in front of my home on a flat gras plain. There I let all of them. It's very nice. The trolleys are very small. If you need dirt for later terraforming.. it's all available in just no time. And the benefit of it: your storages doesn't look that dirty. xD
Now I try to dig a 2x2 tunnel into a nearby hill.. and a chamber. I let the trolleys there. But you need additional trolleys to store the dirt from tunnel. And you need some storage chests for the access-papers.
Next step is to dig that tunnel and chamber under my base. Accessible by a ramp. This way I can transfer all items from storages & chests to/from my underground-trolleys.
A more useful approach is, when you have the soil analyser. If you found layers/areas with optimal growth conditions for a certain plant you can use the soil to increase the area or correct it. Sometimes one layer up or down can change the growth from good to optimal.
You can also make new land at the coast. Sometimes there is only a large sand-layer over huge areas, so why not add two or three layers of dirt on them and start building or planting there. Although I was wondering if this could have a temperature effect on the planet or moisture in the air or something, but I guess not at this point.
You can also underfill areas with the dirt. Somehow all tiles, which have other tiles above them can't grow anything even if there seems to be enough moisture and temperature. Probably an effect of the simplified 2D layers. (I hope they change that at some point, e.g. some tolerance at the edges or even artifical light use).
