I had to open ports on my firewall and forward the same ports on my router, the tutorial explains how. If you've never forwarded ports before, the tutorial skips an important part, you need to set the computer you're running the server on to use a static IP address rather than have your router asign it one automatically.
i think when you start a new game in the main menu you can chose that your friends can join. they need to click your name in the friendlist and then "join"
edit: if you do it like this the server will only run while you're playing. if you want a 24/7 server you should rent one
