Railroad
I'm fairly new to the game (haven't played since the early alpha days when I supported development), but recently I started playing again (huge improvement) and I was wondering about a rail system. Considering the whole steam punk vibe, I was surprised not to see it as a building option. For a mature server, it could help the new comers travel to the untapped resources and centralize resource collection even better. Heck rail companies could form to charge shipping fees or ticket sales. Anyone know if it's a planned feature or is it something someone would just have to mod in if possible?

uh.. this isnt steam punk. i dont think it qualifies as any kind of punk.

True not steam punk but if you look at the alpha rewards it's a top hat and goggles, pretty steam punk. But forget steam punk, the game is focused on ecology and economy. Rail helped epitomize the transition from agricultural to industrial in all economies. Plus transport right now is set to vehicles which I've heard reports of having control struggles. A rail system would only have stop and go which would probably be easier to control from a code standpoint. Signals would be a whole other issue. The main cost I imagine would be time to create the visual assets for the engine and cars.

Yes, it actually does a bit.
Anyway Rails and such have nothing to do with Steam punk. ^^

I didn't see it on the trello board, was it in a Dev blog?

Railroads seem like a great idea. But this game is not even remotely steampunk.

i REALLY dont think most people know what they are talking about in general, but i KNOW people dont know what they are talking about when it comes to punk. there were no frickin lazers in the victorian era. even trying to push it as diesel punk doesnt work because there is no grit to the game, so theres no "punk" involved. the logic that they gave a backer reward of a corny hat doesnt make it anything but a costume piece, much like you can go on amazon and buy a similar hat but we still dont live in a steam punk world.

while victorian era attire seems to be a common trope in steampunk material it actually has nothing to do with the material itself, the steam and the grit does. just like gundam wing isnt actually cyberpunk, because it lacks the grit and the whole high-tech low-life prerequisite FOR being cyberpunk.

railroads created profound amounts of pollution. like.. you may as well just stop worrying about tailings and start decorating your houses with them if they are going to put railroads in the game. i dont even consider the game worlds big enough to require them.

Okay so we all agree there's no steam punk. Rail lines would be really awesome, point taken.
Caduryn 21 févr. 2018 à 14h20
Railroads would be a massive improve considering how weak the actual Transporting system is

I'd be happy if all my storage chests were on the same network tbh, I can't tell you how baffled I was to find my ore tailings being autodropped in my fishing traps.

you mean the industrial revolution that to this day is choking the life out of our planet? yea, great idea in a game that is designed to teach people about sustainability.

i want you guys to think for a second about how much iron/steel would be required to make the tracks (nevermind the wood..) and think about how you could possibly offset that much air pollution on such small worlds. this isnt minecraft, there are supposed to be consequences for your actions.

You should play the game first, this is not real life.
In Game you build a whole Wind Turbine out of 2 Iron.... think about that, 2 IRON INGOTS for a WHOLE Wind Turbine, Railroads wont be that big of a impact, i would imagine mass Track produktion out of small Amounts of Resources.

+1 for rail
Miller 21 févr. 2018 à 15h58
Sure railroads were a source of pollution at the dawn of industrialization, but compare modern pollution from the trucking industry vs. heavy rail and you would see joule for joule, trains are way more energy efficient. Considering powered carts are an option a rail system makes better ecological sense. If anything a team of powered carts vs 1 train would make a ton more pollution from an engineering standpoint. As for big enough, it looks like the walking speed is about 4-5 meters/sec. It makes a 2km hike a solid 12 minute round trip adventure to just sell a backpack worth of stuff at a Central market. Modern mass transport makes sense for a game that's title is a shortening of economy and ecology.
