Best way to mine for ores
So I started digging deep to store my tailings (and mine for ores at the same time) but the farther I get down the more rock I have to walk up to the surface and store in stock piles. Seems like I'm going up and down way too much much too frequently. Break rock, pick up 20 and head to the surface. Is there a way you guys mine or move the rock more efficiently? I have some stockpiles in the mines too but but damn, seems like a pain in the ass to move all the rock to the surface every 30 secs. The farther I get down the longer it takes me to get up with my 20 stones.

Thanks!

You could use a cart and ramps or an elevator.

Thanks... I tried ramps after I posted this and it works great, I feel the ramps arent steep enough though. I have one mine where I used stairs and started a new mine with ramps. It takes a while to get down to 40 levels with the ramps to store my tailings. It would be awesome if you had a steeper set of ramps although maybe the cart wouldnt make it up the ramp..

Thanks again

The real problem here is the ore spawnrates vs the amount needed to craft stuff even with maxed out smelting

my best mining strat so far:
dig 7X7 hole straight down
put a 5X5 mortared stone platform every 6th level in the middle with a stockpile on it
wrap a mortared stone staircase around the outside edge, corners are a little tricky

you can then use the stockpiles as an elevator, just label them with floor numbers
the stockpiles make for easy drop off points as well since they are never more than 5 stairs away

once you get to your desired depth you can then dig laterally, just make sure your tunnel is 5 blocks high and at least 6 blocks wide so you can keep placing stockpiles as you go.

What seems to work best for me is go down deep enough to store the tailings and start carving out a big area. Make a small room and put 2 masonry tables inside. Put a workbench for processing the stones and a repair bench outside the room. Then I start making stone doors which stack 100 and uses up a lot of the stone that after a while you really don't need that much of. I also put in a couple stockpiles to put the stone into as I mine and gather and also for storing the stacks of stone doors. I also make mortared stones to wall off an area for the tailings and put stockpiles down for them. I completely wall off each stockpile of tailings, which may be overkill but I have not had any issues of contamination since I tried this. This method enables me to spend a long time beneath without having to come back up all the time. Also handy for mining an area when you are in search of that elusive ore.
