The game is being developed really well. It's currently in alpha 5.5, with 5.6 being set to release on the 20th. The devs are hard at work and constantly working on the game, usually adding stuff every day. If you join the official Discord server you can see the progress in the #codestream channel (https://discord.gg/A66bzee). I think you'll find the community is a lot more active there as well, so you can get more opinions on the game :D
They're also hoping to reach Beta by the end of 2017, which means the game will also be made available on Steam! Anyone who has bought the game before that will get a Steam key, so you won't have to rebuy it, if you buy the game, you get all future updates, including alpha, beta and full release.
The special thing about Eco, for me, is the way they did the whole ecosystem. You can't cut down too many trees, you can't overhunt, you have to make sure the entire ecosystem survives and thrives to really be able to move forward. The focus isn't on building like in Minecraft. You have to work together with other players as well, to progress in one skill you might need the help of another skill, and for one player to get all the skills takes a lot of time (although with some edits to the skillpoint rate the game is entirely playable solo (you'll still need a server for that)).
There is still a lot of content missing, but at the same time, Eco is one of the most content-heavy alphas I have ever seen. On a normal server you'll easily get tens of hours of playtime out of it already now. And new content is added all the time, one of the things coming in the next patch (5.6) is a full-fledged excavator!
Hope this helps,

So in this regard it's a little bit more like a social experiment. Which worlds will succeed and why? I'm participating to see how this cool idea unfolds.
Yes...digging for stone then hauling it out, one shovelful at a time, 8 times, in order to build one new axe, was definitely much harder than in most crafting games. It makes you really think about using what you have carefully. Which, in a way, is closer to real life than in most games...
As for the v6 update ruining things, how exactly are the devs seeking to limit players to a specialization? Is it that they have to pick just one profession out of many? I'm still a newbie in the game. Thanks.
They introduced skill limit (server admin can adjust it) they introduced skill inflation system - when you buy a skill, the price of other skills rise up drasticly (i dont think server owner can adjust this). They lowered the amount of skill points you can get daily, and the good food giving high sp/day is much more expensive to get now. They added punishing hunger bar drop when doing certain things, for example crafting best food would take at least 1 hour for a cook, but when you eat it and cut 1 tree without skills, all your hunger bar will be drained within a second.
etc. etc.
