Resolution is stuck on 1024 x 768 - possible solutions
TL;DR - If you have a working widescreen copy of HG2 I need your help. (NB: the white screen issue has been fixed as detailed by other posts by disabling 'glow' in graphic options.)

I played a lot of HG1 when I was younger - it was probably one of my first PC games. I recently decided to just go and get HG2 despite the negative reviews. I was mostly looking forward to playing on widescreen, except... it doesn't work?!

It's just stuck on 1024 x 768 no matter how many times I try to change it, and I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem. I spent the last few hours dissecting the VCONFIG.dat file and found the hex values that correspond to the resolution box, but changing them only changes the text and doesn't actually affect the resolution itself.

I feel like I'm close to fixing it somehow, but I was hoping someone here - anyone with a working widescreen copy of HG2 could post their VCONFIG.dat and CONFIG.dat files so I can compare them to mine. You can find these files in C:\Users\username\Documents\My Games\Hotel Giant 2.

Maybe we the community could find a fix for what the devs appear to have abandoned again (despite the HD Update.. 5 years after release).

Thanks. Hope someone can help, as I'd really like to sit down with this game and enjoy it in 16:9 T_T

For me, 1080 res works but there is a problem when I close the game and open it again. It launch with 1024 resolution but setting shows 1080. I have to change it to 1024 and then back to 1080 and it works again. My OS is Windows 10 if that matters.

Hm, my first thought would be to mess around with setting the vconfig file to read-only to see if that stops the game changing it back to 1024.

Sorry I am late 3 years to the party but I had this issue and how I fixed it was.
Go to the My Games folder (in your Documents folder of windows) and rename the Hotel Giant 2 folder to something else (ex: Hotel Giant 2.old). That will make the game recreate the folder when you launch it again. Then you can copy back to the newly recreated folder the PROFILE.DAT file, your saved hotels, your saved layouts and your Hall of Fame data file.
Just ignore the config files all together in the old folder. I had to to this as my Hotel Giant 2 folder became a buggy mess (changing my settings without my consent when the game start, etc...). I assume the issue might be that the folder got somehow corrupted.
I hope it works for you this fix. Again sorry for coming back to this post after 3 years but I recently had similar issues with HG2.

Lol! Thanks for reminding me about this game. The last time I'd "played" it was back when I wrote this post. I've since updated to some new hardware, and your post prompted me to try again. It seems like it worked first try?? (well, after changing the resolution and disabling glow). Weird. Well now I can play it I guess haha. Thanks for sharing your fix though! Hope it helps others.

I actually did not touch any settings before applying my fix. I only touched settings after as I wanted to lower the music volume and increase sounde effects volume of the game. As I did that it worked well and has been running well ever since. Changing the game to a lower resolution causes it to lock on that resolution (I wont touch that again until its patched someday or else I recommend no one else tries to lower the game native resolution if it can fully fit your monitor). I also noticed the desynced mouse on the main menu is tied to changing that particular setting as it was one of the sythoms that led me to "refresh" my game config files. As far as I can tell glow is fine and did not cause any problems while turned on or off.
I appreciate the feedback of the people who tried my fix and/or saw this post.

PS: Indeed, my fix worked on first try.

PS2: I hope you are now running your own hotel empire as I am now. A good tip is buy land as soon as you can and build lots of outdoor swimming pools with affordable prices. Do not ask how but it is way more profitable than just shops :) (I am squashing my competition now with average of 75% market research in LA and sometimes even up to 80%). Its actually fun and a good time killer just to see your hotels full of guests and visitors. On that save game I have 3 hotels and 5 outdoor pools (the game counts two of them as 1 because they are near each other haha) and still figuring a way to run my 3 hotels with minimal loss as I have 2 modern hotels and 1 resort (so the resort is still closed and being used as a staff training ground, sort of, until I figure out a way for my resort to make profit). So even with 2 out of 3 hotels I am already doing that great and keep going up for more when I got the time. That said I hope you enjoy Hotel Giant 2 as much as I am enjoying it myself :)
