Virtual Desktop

Virtual Desktop

Confusion about versions for wired vs. air and steam vs. oculus vs. quest stores?
I have been using virtual desktop that comes with the Oculus Home used with the Link Cable to view my PC desktop on my Quest 2. Am I understand that is a different thing than the Virtual Desktop here on Steam - which does not say it supports Quest 1/2?

I do not have reliable Wifi on my PC, and the DSL router just downgraded their 5ghz support back to 2.4Ghz and do not want to use compressed audio/video of the AirLink - nor do I want to suffer from battery drain which is not an issue with the wire. But I just read that the Virtual Desktop for Quest Air Link has a new frame rate doubler feature - that would be a very good thing to have with the Wired Link does Virtual Desktop on steam support this?

Synchronous Spacewarp is only for the wireless app on the Quest store.

What is the advantage of upgrading to Steam Virtual Desktop from Oculus Home virtual desktop for Oculus Link cable? Are they the same development, it is freemium?

If you have a Quest, you have to buy the app from the Quest store. Period. You’ll get better image quality, the ability to stream PCVR games in addition to your desktop.

As I said I do not wish to stream as I do not have 5Ghz wifi and will suffer compression. I play for long sessions and need the cable recharging so I need to use the uncompressed raw wire. I understood the Quest store version is only for wireless and only does av compression

So my question is are Steam Virtual Desktop and Oculus Home virtual desktop the same just a freemium limited version?

It is compressed with the Quest whether you use a wire or not btw. Oculus Link uses the same video compression as Air Link and Virtual Desktop.

I only have wifi 2.4ghz, surely that compresses more than the wire.

Turns out my ISP had changed from 2.4 and 5ghz wifi connections to a single connection that figures the band rate out, was getting 3 bars of 2.4ghz - added the missing second attena on my computer and now I get 5ghz 4 bars. It is in the other room but that signal seems solid so you have convinced me to give quest virtual desktop a try. I always thought USB was uncompressed same as HDMI or DP - I did not know it was streaming!

I bought both Steam and Quest version so I can evaluate if wired or wireless is best. So double dipping for you and I will be past return, but I guess it is low enough cost to try.

Problem is it seems I cannot have both installed? The steam version is launching me into the Steam VR space and launching the virtual desktop streamer, which is for wireless. I Steam says Virtual Desktop is running but it is not showing up.
