I'm guessing I have the same problem. Yesterday, Virtual Desktop worked perfectly. Installed the new Nvidia driver, and while it works fine in every other app, in Virtual Desktop I get 1 FPS for about 2-3 minutes, and then the app crashes. Will try rolling back.
I'm on the Vive, and I'm running an EVGA GTX 1080 FTW, so GPU power certainly isn't an issue, but I was getting 1-2 fps in Virtual Desktop. My CPU is an i7, and CPU utilization hovers around .2-.4% (insane optimization, btw, great job).
Like I said, everything was perfect last week on the older driver, but after updating to the newest Nvidia driver, 1-2 FPS. I had been using the Force OpenVR setting and MSAA x8, because it worked well before, so I didn't change that... until now. Just for kicks, I tried lowering MSAA to x4 - suddenly 45 FPS. I turned it off - 90 FPS. Works perfect now. I've also turned off the Force OpenVR setting, but it doesn't seem to make a difference in performance now that MSAA is off.
The new Nvidia driver may have some issues with OpenVR and/or MSAA. If anyone else is having the same problem, try lowering MSAA or disabling it.
I found that launching in steam vr with the headset on keeps it from crashing.
make sure you are launching the virtual desktop app from inside steam ve with the headset on.
I did, and I found out the fps drops are due to the MSAA antialiasing as mentioned before, I turned it offf and the problem has been solved :)
How can I send you this SteamVR report, like how do I get such a report, please give me instructions and I will send you a report.

No other program is having problems, just Virtual Desktop. Vive and all VR games are working well, no problems at all.
Virtual Desktop installed ok, when first started it worked. Less than an hour later I tried to start a non VR game in Virtual Desktop and then Virtual Desktop crashed. Since then Virtual Desktop will not launch, crashes every time. Uninstalled, reinstalled a number of times, no change. When I try to launch Virtual Desktop I get the "Headset not supported" message, then I get a menu box with three options, all different VR Modes, like "Steam VR Mode" and two other VR Modes. No matter what I select the Virtual Desktop crashes. I do not believe that my Anti-Virus program or any other software is the problem, because Virtual Desktop worked for 39 minutes when first installed, then crashed on second start-up. No updates or drivers or any other changes were made to my system between start one and start two.
1- Make sure that neither Steam nor Steam VR is running in the background. Check it in the Hidden Icons in your taskbar. If they are running, close them (I also make sure that Vive is not running in the background).
2- Start Virtual Desktop from its executable file installed in your pc. By default: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Virtual Desktop\Virtual Desktop.exe
This should work. If not, try to flush the Steam configuration by opening your web browser and typing in the following in its address field:
steam://flushconfig/
Then, press Enter, close the browser, and try to restart Virtual Desktop as in point 2.
I hope this helps.
Thanks aremoe, that worked.
After the first start ( as described by aremoe ) Virtual desktop reports that it is performing first time startup, like every time it is started.
And if I shut-down Steam ( and have the Vive disconnected ) I can sometimes start Virtual Desktop, sometimes it tries to start, I can see it in Task Manager, but it doesn't actually launche.
Sometimes it will launch from the exe file in the Steam\Steamapps\Common\Virtual Desktop, if started as ADMINISTRATOR, sometimes it will start without selecting administrator and other times I can launch it by clickimg on the desktop icon..... so it is looking to be glitchy.
I will report back and inform you if it actually works when I try to run a non-VR game. I don't know if it failed yesterday because of the non-VR game that I tried to launch, or because it was not the first time start and Windows is saying it is the first start and trying to install some files that were already started.
If Virtual Desktop keeps behaving in such an unstable manner I will refund it, looks like the developer has slowed down with giving support and looking into problems.
And to ggodin, I know that this software is not in my library, I have bought it, I am a genuine customer. My Nephew and I live in the same house, and we have one Vive (can't afford one each) and the Vive is installed on my Nephews computer. If you look in my library you will see a number of VR games with ZERO HOURS PLAYED, because I have been playing on my Nephews computer and his Steam account. Virtual Desktop was bought by me and gifted to my Nephew, and if it fails to function in the propper manner I will refund it. Please don't ignore me just because you don't see Virtual Desktop in my library!
