Virtual Desktop

Virtual Desktop

Offline mode
Please add an offline feature for people people who aren't always connected to the internet so they can always use Virtual Desktop regarding what the situation is. I live at a farm that is from a distant location to a descent ISP provider. So every time when my connection is down I can't use Virtual Desktop because I have to be connected to the internet. This is really frustrating when I want to play a game during a blackout. Unfortunately, not everybody has the luxury to be connected to the internet all the time.

Relatable problem here, would also love an offline function.

The developer is likely not willing to add such feature because it is hard to know that whether you have purchased Virtual Desktop or not in offline mode.
May be an authorization file with time limit is needed?

You know, that actually makes some sense. The Dude is cool, pretty active and responsive. What really urks me is that he is not even saying a single thing about it. Its not the first time that topic came up.

I can understand it, nonetheless, i'd like to have a program that is working 100% of the time and is unaffected from my connection status, or whenever or not a server needs maintenance.

Its also a "peace of mind thing"

That is not a valid reason, all major game titles from ubisoft to valve can be played offline, it would be really unfair just to have no offline feature because the developer is afraid of losing control of it's users. Microsoft's Office365 checks every 30 days to see if your license is valid, so you only need internet once in a while to check if the license is valid, why doesn't he add that as a feature?

It’s not a licensing issue, it’s the whole computer registration / query that uses a cloud server, verifies your identity, sets up encryption, etc. Making it work without the internet would require a big re-write. Not to mention that you still need online access to get your VR games list from Steam.so no short term plans for this

I suspect that this app may allow a remote access to your PC that is why it always need internet, my ESET detects a remote connection to some IP or server even if i don't start this app, anyway i hope i m wrong on this but is never excluded.
And i always wanted to ask the developer how secure is your app and if you can do this to our PC's remotely to see what we do.

Well I'm burning for an answer to this.

Yes the Streamer connects to a cloud server to register your computer and the mobile app connects to it, verified your identity through the Oculus servers and retrieves your computers. All traffic is encrypted and will remain local once connected to your computer

That is total bull, all steam games can be played offline. Name one single player game that requires internet to be able to play? Even the new Half Life Alyx can be played offline. You simply don't trust your own clients and therefore want full control over your program what is really sad because all the big developers allow full offline gameplay. You just say it's hard to program just so you can gain full control over your own software so other people who want to crack the program can't do that. I am going to use ALVR from now on, you should trust people more and not disable offline mode because you have trust issues. Really bad attitude.

I know you're mad because of it, but this is not really the attitude to change his mind about it.

But from the last incident, and the responses here, i can only see the demand for an offline mode rising. So mabe there will be short time plans for this in no time.

Otherwise refering people to ALVR is a bit dickisch but understandable.

I understand your Concerns about safety and all. That has nothing to do with trust Issues, like the other guy said, if you wouldnt do it, you´d not be rewarded for your awesome work since people tend to crack everything.

But what if you´re unaviable someday? Abbandon the Project for whatever reasons? I do not mean that in any threatening or Disrespectfull way but life is crazy and everything can happen.

Some people rely on Virtual Desktop solely for VR gaming and such. There are so many things that can go wrong, even without anyone doing something specific for it. Just like OP said, what if just simply the Internet goes to hell for a Day, or the Service Provider that is Conected is offline due to some minor or Major problems?

I´d second the wish for an offline mode/option. Just my 2 cents.
