How do I adjust the resolution on Virtual Desktop?
Hi, community

I'm a Virtual Desktop user living in Japan.

I'm looking to build a Cloud Gaming PC for just a curiosity.
I don't use Paperspace from Japan due to latency issues. Instead, I built a Virtual Windows Machine with GPU(Nvidia Tesla T4) on Google Cloud Platform(Tokyo Region) and used it to connect to SteamVR.

The topology is as below.

Oculus Quest Virtual Desktop(sideloaded version) <-> wifi(5Ghz) <-> internet(400Mbps) <-> Virtual Desktop Streamer On GCP windows VM(8core, 20GB ram, Nvidia Tesla T4)+SteamVR

I'm very happy with the great VR experience, including the VM fee, except for the outbound internet traffic fee. Thank you for creating such a great app😁

While as you probably know, there is a fee for outbound internet traffic in the Public Cloud Service, and that fee is slightly high ( USD 0.11 per1GB ). I would like to optimize this outbound internet traffic fee.

I have already selected "Lower" for "Video Frame Rate" and the current transfer throughput is 32Mbps, the frame rate is capped at 60fps and the codec is HEVC.

It seems like to be the resolution of the Virtual Desktop with "Use optimal resolution" is fixed at 1920x1080. Is this correct?

I thought that if I wanted to adjust the outbound internet throughput any lower on GCP, I could think about narrowing down the resolution of Virtual Desktop, etc. Is this an appropriate idea?

If you have any good ideas on how to adjust the resolution of Virtual Desktop for internet outbound traffic volume optimization, could you let me know?

The only setting that affects the bandwidth is the “Video Bitrate Limit”. Using 60fps option won’t lower it. The “Use optimal resolution” option is only for the desktop and doesn’t affect the bandwidth (the image gets resized down if the desktop is at a higher resolution than 1920x1080). Hope this helps!

ggodin,

Thanks for your quick response 😄

I had a good understanding of the room for optimization owing to your advice.

While the Internet outbound traffic is a little bit high cost at the moment, Virtual desktop and streamer work perfectly with the above setup with public cloud compatibility and I'm happy enough with it.

In the context of cloud gaming PCs, the price of internet outbound traffic charges (and the quality of the lines) seems to be more important than VMs fees. I will continue to take advantage of Virtual Desktop after understanding this limitation.

Thank you.
