Virtual Desktop

SteamVR won't recognize Oculus Quest
Since the update which added support for the Oculus store, I can't use Virtual Desktop for VR games/apps.
I don't have Oculus Rift or Link cable, so the Oculus software won't let me to install a device. The SteamVR client stopped recognize the Virtual Desktop Headset/Controllers.

Couldn't find how to configure the Oculus software with no hardware.

Any tips how to setup Virtual Desktop to work with SteamVR?

Thanks

You can install the Oculus Rift software, just click “Skip” at the bottom when it asks to choose which headset you have. Then restart your computer. You’ll have to launch your games from the Virtual Desktop Games tab in VR (when you press menu on your left touch controller)

Thanks for the reply. Maybe it was like that in the past(I also remembered something similar), but it doesn't work now.
If I select skip, it doesn't add the device. It shows that I have Quest and Touch but they are not connected. I can't add the Rift or the Rift S.

But I did manage to run SteamVR games again, had to quit the SteamVR in desktop, and re-launch it from the button in Virtual Desktop on the Quest.

The Oculus desktop app won’t see your headset and you can’t launch things from there, that’s normal. Your Oculus games will appear in the games tab however

I can confirm the same thing. SteamVR does not think there is a headset connected. Seems like VD is just plain broken.

Did you install the version from SideQuest? Did you launch SteamVR from the button in Virtual Desktop?

Don't know what side quest is. I purchased the official app from oculus store. I did launch steamvr inside of the virtual desktop. it loaded and said no headset.

The store version doesn’t have the VR streaming feature (Oculus didn’t want it on their store). You have to install the version from SideQuest (a program that lets you install apps not approved on the oculus store). This is explained in the 2nd question in the FAQ: https://www.vrdesktop.net

Good to know. Read that part of FAQ but didn't really make sense at the time. Now it does. This program is super janky though. It would only connect to my desktop twice. Other times it says cannot connect. Nothing has changed between tries. Desktop is wired to router and headset on 5GHZ. I have to keep rebooting the Quest and the desktop app. I know this is a WIP. Just letting you know.

You probably have software on your computer blocking connections, this isn’t normal

Classic dev response. The only programs I have running is Oculus, Steam, and the VD Streamer. I have to restart the app in the headset a few times before it connects. Once everything is up and running it seems to work well for Saints and Sinners. However Onward does not work with VD as it does not go to VR view and simply stays in desktop view. The game shows the splash screen then crashes. Works fine with Link meaning it is another VD issue. And yes, I have tried launching from the VD games library. Does this program only work with Steam games??? Because Onward is on my Oculus account.

You know what, don't even bother responding. I'm just going to get a refund. I spend more time troubleshooting this broken app than I spend actually using it. Alpha build at best. Maybe worth $5. Would have been nice to know when I bought it that I would need to download several other programs just to make it work. Even with those programs it's questionable.

There’s a compatibility list for games in the release notes. Onward works on Steam but not through the Oculus store. You do realize that the ability to stream PC VR games to a mobile VR headset is a hack and that it won’t magically work for every game right? The VR streaming feature isn’t advertised in the app description in the store (or anywhere for that matter) because it’s an experimental extra feature.

I am having the same problem as @De-Panther. I have sideloaded VD on the Quest. Running Version 1.12.1 on both Oculus Quest and PC. The Quest connects with the PC flawlessly but SteamVR doesn't recognize the headset (anymore). I do not even get the "Launch Steam VR" button in VD anymore. I have reinstalled both SteamVR and VD several times and disabled all firewalls. This drives me nuts!

Ryzen 3900X
Geforce 1080GTX latest Driver (445.75)
32GB RAM

Same happens on my laptop btw. both machines used to work.

Thanks for any tips.

If you don’t see a “Launch SteamVR” button it’s because you didn’t sideload successfully through SideQuest. Try installing latest in SideQuest again

Thank you, I did do that with the latest update. Though, after a factory reset of the Quest and a clean reinstall it finally works.
