Gear VR & high GPU usage
Hi! I just bought the Virtual Desktop app so I could play games with my Gear VR.

Is it normal that vrdesktop streamer uses 80% GPU (video encoding) in idle and ~3% CPU?

Also after I start any game GPU usage is so high I can't use vrdesktop at all. Game is running smoothly on the screen but in Gear VR it's unusable. Also strangely vrdesktop GPU usage stays 100% after I close the game.

I'm using quite old but capable 7970 Ghz edition so could it just be it?

Are there anybody running games smoothly with Gear VR?

What kind of computer do you have? To play games it is recommended to have a recent desktop GPU.

Custom desktop:
i5-3570K
Radeon HD 7970 GHz edition
8gb ram

This runs easily newest games at high graphics 1080p. For example I've playing shadow of the tomb raider at 3D 1080p high settings. Old but gold.

The Radeon 7970 only supports VCE 1.0 (video coding engine) so it isn’t great at video encoding unfortunately. You might get better results if you reduce the resolution of the game (if playing fullscreen) or the desktop if playing in borderless/windowed mode. It might also be a network issue; make sure your computer is wired to your router

You played them in 1080... but now you're trying to play them in 1080 with your real monitor as you did, plus also on a virtual monitor in a full rendered virtual environment, packing the video from the PC and streaming it wirelessly and putting it all together on a phone. It's a lot more resource intensive this way.

My office printing/web pc is currently an i5-4670 with 8bg ram and a Nvidia GT 720 that I picked up for $180 back in August from a Microcenter sale on refurbished HP Prodesks. I had the 7970 as well, but I upgraded from that around 5 years ago. It's a 7+ year old video card paired with a 7+ year old processor. They predate the work to create any of the current vr solutions even being started or the ideas announced. I get it, it sucks. I spent decades being 10 years behind in gaming, but the real answer if that system will never go well on anything VR. Better to know if now and plan to replace it if you'd like than to waste the money trying to patch things up when it's never going to work out.
