Virtual Desktop

Virtual Desktop

How to use Dashboard?
How exactly do I use the dashboard? I can't seem to find/figure it out. From what I understand I'm supposed to be able to use it to see my desktop inside a VR game, right? How do I get it to do that?

I'm on Oculus trying to get this to work through steam for Elite.

Under the Tools category in your Steam library, you should see “Virtual Desktop Dashboard”. Install it. Then when SteamVR launches it will automatically launch with it. Once in Elite, press the hamburger menu button on your left Touch controller to bring up the SteamVR Dashboard. Select the Virtual Desktop tab (third circle from the left). If you want to detach your desktop and see it in Elite, grab it by holding one grip and place it wherever you want. Now when you go into a VR game, the overlay will be visible.

The Dashboard is a bit broken at the moment because of a few SteamVR bugs; it won’t let you cycle through your monitor or resize the screen.

Well, I can't even go back to steam VR once in ED as the game assumes direct control over the touch controllers.

You have ED in Steam correct? Then Once in pressing the hamburger menu button on your left Touch controller should bring up the SteamVR Dashboard..

I'm not sure why but ED will not open the steamVR dashboard as it takes full use of the touch controllers. Only button that does something that has nothing to do with ED is the Oculus button on the right hand controller.

That’s because ED is running using the Oculus SDK rather than OpenVR. In that case, you’ll have to use Dash to bring up your desktop or a window into ED because SteamVR isn’t running. Virtual Desktop’s Dashboard is for games that run using OpenVR.

So what I'm getting is that for some reason Oculus is just negating SteamVR. This is more annoying than I can deal with at this point.

There might be a way to Force OpenVR in Elite but in any case you shouldn’t be doing that as you’ll get worse image quality. Use Oculus Dash (by switching to the public test channel in Oculus), and you’ll be able to bring a window into the game,
Darkmuramasa Jan 25, 2018 @ 1:50am
Yeah I was just fooling around with that, but I don't exactly know how to bring the window into it.

Edit: I only have ED installed through steam. Would I need it installed in Oculus Home for the Dashboard to work?

this is what i do:
open game, i.e. euro truck simulator
press system button on wand
see steamVR dashboard
click on Virtual Desktop bubble
see monitor 1 desktop

then

i physically walk forward to the window and do what you said here
If you want to detach your desktop and see it in Elite, grab it by holding one grip and place it wherever you want. Now when you go into a VR game, the overlay will be visible.
but literally nothing happens. i cant grip the window nor getting it out of the steam dashboard.

what am i doing wrong?

SteamVR is a bit buggy right now, to detach the desktop you need to be in the SteamVR Beta branch.
kiD7 Jan 26, 2018 @ 3:35am
okay, tank you. that was the thing.

i'm able to detach it, but the movement feels glitchy in a way and i couldnt pin it where i actually wanted to.
can you already tell, when its going to fully work? are you planing to implement some kind of feedback, when moving the desktopwindow?

i enjoy your software, keep up the good work :)

i read your post on /r/vive. i more or less refunded ovrdrop because of it. but the feature you were talking about isnt there yet. thats why i ask, when we re able to use a detached resizable window ingame. could you please tell some future prospects, so i can make a reasonable desicion if i should wait or go for ovrdrop again. thank you.

I can’t make promises on anything. I’m currently waiting on Valve to fix issues with SteamVR before spending anymore time on the Dashboard.

So yeah, I personally can't use this for Elite atm as for some reason the game is using my Touch controllers. In order to have my desktop with the Oculus Home (Beta) dashboard I'd also need to have the game installed via Oculus Home making me have two instances of the game installed.

In short Virtual Desktop is not useful for me in what I'm trying to achieve, sadly.
