Virtual Desktop

Virtual Desktop

Stays running after exit
VD will run and work just fine, but when I quit out Steam says that it is still running and will not launch it again. If I restart Steam I can run VD again, no problem. I'd like to not have to restart steam when exiting VD. I tried killing the VD service process but doesn't do anything. What can I do?

This is because the Dashboard Overlay is still running; this is the functionality that lets you see/use your desktop in any other VR game. It won’t use any resources while not in use so you can leave it running. If you need to launch Virtual Desktop, you can open the Virtual Desktop Dashboard and press the Launch Virtual Desktop button at the bottom.

This weird behavior is because the Dashboard is the same app in Steam (although they are two separate executables) but Steam only allows one to be running at a given time. I’m hoping to find a solution with Valve about this issue.

If you want to quit the Dashboard Overlay, you can manually kill the VirtualDesktop.Dashboard.exe process but like I said, it barely uses any resources when not in use.

No, I think you misunderstood me or I wasn't clear enough. The VD process is not running. I've exited and killed all VD processes, but Steam still shows it as running. I'm not worried about resources. Steam won't let me run VD again because it still thinks VD is still running. Are there other processes that don't have Virtual Desktop in their name that I should look for?

Steam isn’t always detecting that an app closes. If you look into the Steam Discussions you’ll notice it’s a widespread issue. There aren’t other processes besides the Virtual Desktop and Dashboard ones.

So what would you say I could do about this?

Don’t manually kill processes. If you want to relaunch Virtual Desktop, for now do it from the Dashboard or close SteamVR and then launch from desktop again. I’ll hopefully have this resolved in an upcoming update.

Yeah this needs to be fixed. After exiting the app the dashboard in tray disappears but three processes are still running. STILL running. And my malware keeps detecting something it does not like when exiting also. That also needs to be fixed.

Now asuggestion I have is for you to add a function that can allow us to zoom out our 360 videos. Sometimes it is like you are right up close to things in the videos and it can cause some dizziness. If that is possible to add please do so. Thanks.

Even when the Dashboard is independent of the main app, there will be 3 processes running: the service, the dashboard and the server. Those processes are required. They don’t use any resources when not using the dashboard so you don’t have to worry about them.

Zoom and tilt functionalities are being added to the video player.

As for the malware detection, you should disable it; Virtual Desktop simply sends anonymous telemetry on exit (OS Version, Language, error reports). See other threads about this.

Well I don't like it. My malware is app is not junk. I trust that more than you. If I exit I want the app to exit. That is for me to say not you. Sorry.

The main app exits when you exit, what’s left running is the Dashboard. Once it is separated into a different AppId, you will be able to not run it if you don’t want it (that’s the ability to see/use your desktop while in other games).

The current behaviour is causing steam to think Virtual Desktop is still running even after closing the dashboard which is a pain in the ass and requires killing the processes to rectify.

Where is the "dashboard overlay" you are referring to in this thread? I don't see an overlay anywhere, after I exit VD (IE click the X). Clicking "Play in VR" again in Steam doesn't work, as the OP described.

(for the record, I would also prefer if VD actually closed when I close it...trying to use concurrently w/ Unity is a nightmare...)

Press hamburger button on your controller, at the bottom you’ll see the Virtual Desktop Dashboard button

ok, I found it (but not with the "hamburger" button - ie 3 horizontal bars - it was under the other one).

But just to confirm, there is currently no way to close/disable this Dashboard process, other than force-killing it from windows Task Manager?

Correct, you can prevent it from starting with SteamVR however. I should have it separated into its own App in a few days.

This is now fixed in the latest version.
