More Language Options.
It would be too good this game with translation into several languages ... for example, Portuguese , Spanish and many others.

Hi there! We would love to translate the game, but we can't figure out how to do it well -- there's around 750,000 words of content, and most of it is remixed on the fly by the game based on what you do. It was hard enough to make it work in English!

Let me ask you this way: Im playing this one on iOS and I really would like to see those other languages also on other platforms than just here on Steam. How did you make text files in this game? Is it packed in some mass file or is it simple text file somewhere in root?
Because if would be the second way it would be easily possible to test with texts and play with it.
Would be worth the try. The worse way would be to upload some google document with all texts and do it by "blind" translating... Same way was done for example Game Dev Tycoon or Among the Sleep. But I do prefer free testing choice and then just send you modified text files somewhere.
What do you say? Would be fun to translate this one.

As inkle stated, it's not as straightforward as just translating 750,000 words (which, itself, is an incredibly daunting task). The game uses numerous flags to build customized paragraphs as you go. The differences in grammar and sentence structure between languages will further complicate this.

It would be great if they can figure out a way to efficiently translate the game (and maybe they will), but it is a lot more complicated than you might be thinking.

Thew's hit the point here; it's not just the amount of words, it's the way they stitch themselves together. There are 11,000 options in the game and 575 variables, all of which can and are used to branch, rewrite and change the text...

Our best hope is that software translation can read the whole page, and then translate the resulting page in one go!

And the result will be one big disaster indeed...
As a text project, it wont be small job, it will be long run (For team of 2 or 3 people its like 3 to 4 months when they will do it for free in their spare time, but it will be possible). But its all about being able to modify texts and be able to see it directly in game so it can be permanently tested.
I know what Im talking about. Our Czech community are specialist on translating games into our language because it is quite usual that large developers dont want to make our localization offical because our market potential is just way too insignificant compare to Poland or Germany for example. But as if you think it would not be possible, then your are for sure right.

Se agradecería enormemente una traducción al español para quienes no tenemos el privilegio de conocer la lengua de Shakespeare. Yo desde luego en ese caso no dudaría en comprar el juego, porque parece muy interesante.
Aunque entiendo que un proyecto de traducción pueda ser un proceso largo y complicado, pero aun así sería lo ideal.

when you say 575 variables, did you mean like 575 pages ?

each page seems to be a composition of "past decisions", "common body" and "actions to take" (like we can see on screenshot 4), these could be each a string to be translated in order to faciltate reuse.

it seems to be possible to translate although it would be time consuming, but using an open project like Plague Inc used on Crowdin (I as proofreader on it), you can get 4 or 5 translators working for each language, all volunteers and for free. In the long run it would benefit everyone involved..

if you guys ever plan to translate it, please count me in for PT-BR, I'd love to participate on it.

There's no "common body" anywhere in the game -- each "page" of text is assembled from sentences, paragraphs, words, phrases, pulled together by logic which uses the current game state to decide what to say. Some passages are pretty fixed; others vary a subtly; some vary a lot. Just fixing the grammar to work in English was a lot of work - because a line here might connect to a line somewhere else.

What you describe is still nothing new in string texts. It is usual to dynamical connect more than just one sentence and that allways brings problems with sentence build up - but its nothing new. But, like you said, it is 750K words... and that is A LOT! So I doubt there would be enough of good will people to do it just because of devotion to this fine art game and Endure until the end.
I would like to try to just check those string files, because Im curious how much complicated it is. Would you start just for curiosity some google document? It could be restricted only for requests so people would not spoil the game through it.

Okay, so for instance, here's a block of text, used as a fallback when certain cities run out of "proper" content for exploration (so no spoilers here!)

I {&took a few hours to explore|spent a few hours in exploration|walked the streets a while|struck up a few conversations here and there|browsed around, my ears open}, {&investigating|learning|discovering|hunting for} {&the {&various|}|} {&options for how we|ways in which we|possibilities for how we} might {&continue our journey|travel onwards|make progress|proceed|continue|go forth}.

The "&" means "cycle through this list", but most of the rest of the game uses logic - states of variables, previous decisions, etc etc. If you can translate that, that's 0.05% of the game text done....

I get the logic of these and it works pretty fine with evolving text. It is kinda similar to, for example, Game Dev Tycoon I did like two years ago.
The biggest problem I can see is with variables where you talk about some person and what is it doing. Example: "I saw the man/woman down the ally and he/she walked to me and said: ..."
It is pretty simple for english in this example, but for Czech it would not work, because our lang would need to have even the word walked in variable, because we separate gender in verbs. But: It could be overrunned by typing these variables right into the he/she variable so we could have there he walked/she walked. This is the usual way how to make it work for us. But it depends on how much you use those variable he/she in some other strings. Because if you would have only one he/she for all strings at once, then I could not make that way.

I hope I did not twisted my self in some cycle and it makes a sence a bit at least :)

In short: The text I see here is possible to translate but it all depends on how much variable you use for how many kind of similar or even completely different sentences.

Exactly. It's definitely possible.... but we're pretty sure it would be really difficult, and then difficult again to make into a *good* translation. And we're only a three-person studio! So, it's pretty unlikely we'll ever attampt it.

Im willing to try make it in other language. Once I finish my Sid Meiers Starships Fan translate (terrible game but its already almost done and Im no quiter), then I would like to try this. I would like to see whole string file. Would it be possible? Maybe send it to me on: Khalashnikovf AT email.cz. Or maybe with some possibility how to insert it into a game to test what it does. It could be tested on London to Paris sequence.
