Whisky, 40 days and No Hotels items
1. I'm attempting the "Barrelling Forward!" achievement, I know the requirements, but after several tries I've failed to find whisky to bring with me to North America!
Most frustrating.
So, does anyone know of places were whisky is likely to be obtainable?

2. The 40 days achievement...the closest I've gotten is 42 days. Maybe I could have shaved off a day or two here and there, but it would require luck/excellent timing. And even if I timed it right, there would be no time left for getting items to sell, meaning I'd run out of cash in the Pacific or before New York.
What route is the best across the Pacific, and how to resolve the finance side of it?

3. For "No hotels", which set of items (travellers set etc) is best to avoid Fogg losing health?

1. It sounds like you at least know how to get that achievement but just have a have a hard time finding whiskey. Honestly, I just stumbled across whisky on a playthrough and decided that that was the one I would do the achievement on. I have heard that on seed 2 you can get whiskey in Bucharest but I haven't been in Bucharest on that seed to check myself.

2. This is the only achievement that I need. Ugh. I'm waiting for someone to just figure it out and I just try to copy it.

3. The best set depends on what route you take. If you plan to go through Russia, get the Russian wardrobe/the cold weather wardrobe, etc. Honestly, I just buy whatever I think will help. I end up with a lot of suitcases but whatever. Also, instead of talking to people/reading the news while traveling, attend to Fogg.

About the forty days achievement - you'd be well-advised to check out the "best times" thread pinned on top of this forums board. If you read it, you'll find some possible routes and tips & tricks for following them, including some from yours truly.

Carrying whiskey shouldn't be necessary for 'Barreling Forward' - if you travel the Canada route, you should bump into the whiskey thieves, grab their token and use that to get yourself into trouble with the natives.

The by far fastest route across the Pacific is the blimp flight from Manila to Acapulco. For a speed run, a boosted Transsiberian passage, detouring through Korea and from there south to Manila and blimp from there to Acapulco should be the quickest way to America. The problem is you'll usually be very strapped for cash once you reach Manila (and the blimp flight is expensive), and if you lack the 'boil water' option there, you'll be in trouble. If you get as far as Acapulco, you can usually chug along until you get on the train up the east coast, where you can earn money in the boxing match to cross the Atlantic with.

Wrt. 'No Hotels' - the best tip is to spend as few nights as possible in cities, and if at all possible, add Honolulu to your travels. If you walk on the shores of the beach there, you'll get a free complete health regain.

Kebzero, I'm pretty sure you need whiskey in order to be found guilty and do the barreling forward bit. If you don't find whiskey, they don't find you guilty. I've tried to be found guilty without whiskey and it's never worked that way.
Thanks for the tips!
I checked out the pinned thread and decided to check out the Istanbul-Tehran-Benares-Manila-Acapulco route and wow...complete it in 35 days :P
And I worried I had too many nights in hotels... The key was the items I bought in Tehran/Kabul and sold in Lahore/Benares, and of course the Manila-Acapulco route. Yokohama never again!
Of course I stumbled up on Whisky in N. Orleans on the way :P

Grab their token? Not sure I understand what you mean, but I will try this approach as well (I thought you could only pick up the tracking device? That is not enough)

I believe the No Hotels achievement will be the hardest now, but I think I have an idea.

Edit: I can confirm that whatever you say to the natives, it won't matter if you *don't* carry whisky.

The "token" they're talking about *is* the tracking device.
Found whisky eventually (now everything seems to work out!)...

Edit: first failed the Hotels by going via Acapulco, switching to San Francisco thus avoiding travel by car and winning the boxing match for finances, did the trick :)

Turns out the Hotels achievement is more rare than the Niagara achievement though :P

That's odd, best as I recall it I didn't nave whiskey in my inventory when I pursued that achievement - I just made darn sure NOT to protest our innocense once the trial began, just going for deliberate bad answers. That made them put me in the lockup for the follow-up escape attempt.

I tried that approach a few days ago kebzero, without whisky in my inventory, but I was found innocent regardless.
With whisky you can proclaim to be a smuggler from the get-go.

I've no idea about 1. and 3., but I've recently managed to finish in less the 40 days.
It took me 39, but trust me when I say I made a lot of mistakes, so you can easily do better with more luck or just being more cautious.
Uh, since people tend to get offended easily about these kind of things, please notice that somewhere on the internet you can find someone else's report about this route.

ROUTE
Paris, Vienna, Warsaw, Moscow, Irktusk, Urga, Yokohama, Honolulu, Acapulco, New Orleans, New York, London.
GENERAL ADVICE
It's a very expensive journey overall, so pay attention on the money. Consider sleeping roughly.
I did need to use the bank once, but I'm convinced it can be avoided. Sometimes you need to sleep somewhere due to bad timing, and I guess you might have time to collect money there (I don't remember being that lucky though)
You'll also NEED to "Wait" many times in the first part of the journey, until the experimental vehicle from Yokohama to Honolulu is discovered.

I went to Paris, then Vienna, Warsaw and Moscow. I believe I had to spend the night in Vienna, and decided to way one day in Poland as well, since I was afraid I'd have needed the money (also I think that the train from Moscow wasn't due until the next day).
I always had time to stop at the market, but sometimes you need to buy and sell fast.
Try to speak to discover about the routes: it doesn't work always, but it allows you to save a lot of time. On the train to Warsaw you can discover about the Trans-siberian train being super fast: you'll need to talk to the conductor while on the transiberian and convince him to speed up.
He'll be reluctant at first, don't even try to bribe him, but threaten him after talking to Lady Roza: it'll do the trick.
Uh, in Vienna you can acquire a flute (for free), while on the transsiberian some soldiers might donate you a balalaika (you'll need as much money as you can).
I decided to get off at Irktusk, where I took the train to Beijing but I got off in Urga (it does work). The Mongol Caravan takes time and hearts, you should avoid it.
In Urga I didn't find any better option but exploring, to discover about the Garuda and head off to Yokohama. It's a tiring journey.
Once on the experimental aircraft, you'll need to solve the murder mistery. I don't want to spoil it for you, but you might make mistakes which won't allow you to succeed later on (there are multiple events, so you can't shut it off). Solving it will allow you to proceed to Acapulco for free.
Once in America, head for New Orleans and finally to New York. You might need to win the boxing match to have enough money to complete the journey to London on the 4900 pounds worth Henrietta (which is FAST).

Lemme know if I haven't be clear enough

Do you remember which seed you did this on?
Aramil Jun 15, 2016 @ 1:25pm
Seed V; I don't think it matters so much though.
I wasn't particularly lucky with my purchases, and I usually had a harsh time changing the schedules when I would've liked to.
Thank you for your extensive response :)

I tried a similar route, but found like you indicated, that it was too expensive, but I managed to finish in 35 days; Istanbul-Tehran-Benares-Manila-Acapulco-N.Orleans-New York ("stolen" from someone else mind you..)

I too think that seeds matters little in regards to routes, for particular items/quests though it might.

Trying to find some whisky, I've been searching for it for the last couple playthroughs (mostly the transiberian - urga - garuda - yokohama - honolulu - san francisco route) but I haven't found it anywhere... Any suggestions?
