Personally, I love 80 Days' combination of an excellent choose-your-own adventure story and strategic thinking around route planning/money. I've tried out some visual novels, and while they have their place, most don't involve additional game play beyond choosing some actions/responses. I was pleasantly surprised by Magical Diary, which does have a choose-your-own-adventure-story + other strategic decisions (was way more engaged by the magic school setting than I thought I would be). Like in 80 Days, different text options also appear depending on earlier decisions (this hasn't always been the case in other VN's that I tried).
