All the ships in DBD are based solely on tropes.
David/Dwight (also known as Kingfield): Nerdy Kid+Athletic Kid

Nerd+Athlete is in general a popular combination because of the whole "opposites attract" thing.

Opposites attract I guess? I personally don't ship it and I don't really ship gay ships (like guy gay ships) because it's hard to find perfect matches. I do however ship Nea and Meg because they are cute af. :))
