TOME 3 LEGION CINEMATIC IS NOT CANON
"But a cleaner who was still there grabbed Julie as soon as she came near. Hearing her stifled cries, a dark impulse took over Frank. He rushed to her aid, knife in hand, and without hesitating, planted the blade into the cleaner's back.
As the group stared at Frank in shock, he ordered them to finish the job. Joey clenched his jaw, grabbed the knife, and stabbed the bleeding man in the ribs. Susie didn't want to do it. Frank shouted at her; they had to finish what they'd started. Julie closed her eyes and slid the knife into the man's chest."

But in the cinematic we see that julie killed him by stabing him in jaw. BHVR WTF?

I think thats on them not paying attention to their own lore.

1. from whole cutscene you are only made because she stabed him in jaw? there are many other things like joe and susie should attack before julie.
2. maybe it's not the same event maybe this cutscene =/= event form legion's lore
3. you should mark this as spoiler. now you're like that guy that spoilers end game

1.Not only that, but the fact that Joe and Susie didn't even attack,in fact both of them looked a little unnerved

2.It has to be the event from their backstory,it may be slightly different but it doesn't make sense if it isn't (As that would mean there were at least two times where they tried to rob a store and Julie got grabbed from behind by a janitor)

3.Agreed

Probably just an artistic expression

So far, none of the cinematics obtained from the tomes accurately represent the characters. They are entirely new retconned backstories for everybody and I think it makes the lore of DbD all the muddier in the process.

The following consists of spoilers from the tomes juxtaposed with the original backstories of the characters. They all clash so far. The only one I really buy is Claudette's, sort of.

Evan may actually be innocent since we saw the mine collapse on him when in original lore, he was the one who collapsed it on his father. In his original lore, he didn't hate his father, he loved him, idolized him and was a brutal monster who broke the workers for his father while he sat in the shadows, suffering from paranoid delusions.

Rin was a gentle girl who was ruthlessly slain by her father who was possessed by fear and hatred of his life. In her original lore, she was taken at the very moment of her death by The Entity and struck a deal that one day she'd be able to punish her father for all eternity for the betrayal and that was her only reason to exist. Now she's becoming a violent sadist driven by the very literal ghost of Kazan to become a new Oni even before her father's breakdown, showing a terrible side of her that would likely turn her into a killer before her father kills her.

Carter used to be a timid, but brilliant psychology major in university taken in by Dr. Stamper and made to learn the most brutal methods of extracting information in the name of serving the USA and eventually co-created Project Awakening, but over time, the strain and guilt of what he was asked to do drove him to insanity and he killed Stamper and all other members of Project Awakening and fled into the Fog. Now, he was a deranged sociopath from the very beginning, viewing life only through a power struggle and actively disobeyed his teachers to fulfill his own, personal fantasies of causing terrible agony. He wasn't even trying to interrogate his prey like the original Carter, he was simply trying to torture them and was deus ex machina'd into a pre-established Project Awakening as opposed to him getting arrested and tried for murder and torture.

What about Jane?

All the archives seem to add about her is that she's wanted to be an actor for a while and also she stands against unkind stereotypes. I don't think those contradict her original lore.

Admittedly, I've not earned hers yet. I don't play Survivor often enough, I'm afraid. I tend to have more fun playing Killer, but I'm a decent rank on both sides. ^^'
Jane is currently like... lvl 8 or so. Picking up new characters is kind of dis-incentivized when you play at higher ranks with killers that really push how much you can accomplish with your base kit. I can only speak from the cinematics I've obtained on my own thus far, which equates to... all of the Killer cinematics released so far.

That's news to me,i never fully paid attention to how the backstories matched up,i completely forgot:

Evan was his fathers right hand before just randomly snapping and causing a mass murder

Carter, while not a person who was obsessed with torture from the beginning like the challenges state,he was originally just one of the best who was known for being brutal (with people literally begging not to be sent to him) before going insane and killing stamper in an attempt to figure out mind control

And as for Rin,you stated it best, she went from being a shy girl who was killed by her father to apparently having the Oni being the reason she has anger? I think? I thought originally the main reason she was a killer was because she wanted revenge, anger didn't exactly keep her alive, but it's what made the entity choose her

I can't say I like the direction they're going, but you might dismiss these things if you convince yourself that these things aren't from the versions we see ingame - or the 'original' characters, as the Archivist (Observer's original name) has made it clear that his Auris can see into the multiverse so we might be seeing different versions of the characters' backstories with the Many Worlds Interpretation, but that could just be explaining retconning character stories out of laziness (not reading or not caring about the original lore) or manipulating the player into somehow relating to the characters better by making the evil characters heroes in their own stories. (With the exception of Doctor, who, again, went from the more realistic person who was just doing their job to a sociopathic, sadistic monster who just barely got away with living out their fantasy)
