Addon is playing for trapper, its not about trapper that underrated
Same for old pinky finger, same for pinhead that playable on high level only with pink and chain addoons, same for myers with tombstone
Try to play on trapper vs good (I mean really good) swf without or even with this addons and then tell us how it feels
I think even a bad killer with good addon is still worse then a good killer with good addon. Like the example you use with tombpiece like i cant understand why player cant just jump into a locker when they think myers is close to down them its kinda an easy counterplay.
Btw trapper is really fun to play specially when trap are gettjng trigger all game long.
And as for OP: Trapper is as good as the survivors are unaware. If they are aware enough, then he is just an m1 killer without a power.
If you aren't using iri stone, they can just disable your traps. Trapping pallets and windows, while strong, is extremely obvious. Obvious traps are bad, because a lot of good survivors disable them pretty quickly.
-large, open maps hurt him even more than any other killer
-has to pickup his power at the beginning and during the match (that is 2 min of your average 5 min match)
-survivors can trail you and 'remove' your power
-massive trap placing issues (though other killers have that issue as well)
-requires to this day certain addons to have base kit powers
-certain addons working against you e.g. tar bottle on a map like coldwind
Last but not least, the devs were never able to explain us how you disarm a freaking beartrap by sticking your arm into it and triggering it.
Even a coordinated SWF is going to struggle against a Trapper with a full build that offers RPD for example. Mainly because of those stupid narrow doorways that force survivors to constantly be disabling traps or be completely cut off from an already limiting map.
However, other maps are way too big for him like Badham, Garden of Joy, and Ormond. His traps are also really easy to see and navigate around on some maps like Eyrie of Crows and The Game. Even with really strong addons, that's a lot of maps to be at such a disadvantage.
You then have to consider DbD's context. As killer you forget the 8 or 9 times out of 10 you absolutely dominate, but the one or two times you actually struggle stick with you. Most matches you're going to be against SWFs playing for fun and solo queue survivor teams that have at least one person grazing the edge of the map doing nothing.
Even with double iri addons (which is stronger than honing stone) you just dont have much in the way of tools.
Imagine for example if the nurse had to walk over to her first blink then blink/walk over to her second blink to start a game. That would suck right? And that's part of why trapper sucks.
There were tons of micro nerfs to trapper that ruin him. In the past bear traps had a larger trip radius that would extend around pallets and meant that if a trap was in a "lane" then you couldnt go around it. The "lanes" of loops were extended in part to nerf this AND the trip radius of the trap was reduced. The problem is that in doing so you can now sometimes go around bear traps unless they are perfectly placed at a pallet. But then the survivor can just go around and throw the pallet down and fast vault over it.
Trapper is not viable vs good players.
Trapper is not viable on all maps (requiring tall grass).
Trapper gets punished by not using Iri addon to cause wounds to traps being disarmed (that should be default to be honest). Furthermore there is no "punish" to disarm a trap while already wounded even when using the iri addon (this should become a deep wound).
Trapper is a M1 killer with no power unless he has 2-3 armed traps nearby. This is bad because M1 killers generally suck in chase.
All that aside there was a fun guile element to trapper but he's just not viable in the current state of the game.
