On loops wolf is not good as you might not get the orbs at all. If survivor runs through one it disappears to my experience. So you don't get the speed boost if they keep looping the same thing. The leap attack can be hard to use as it sometimes just queue's the second leap so fast that you have no time to center the survivor.
And you see those orbs when they are literally 2 meters away from you...
So, yes, wolf form is underwhelming
