If you have homies to play with then by all means this game is a lot of fun, especially in custom lobbies playing it like a chill party game... But even then, playing with a premade group of people you know slaps too if you que up together as a SWF (survive with friends).
Still in terms of social aspects - it is commonly accepted that Solo-que (or, playing by yourself as survivor) is more often than not a very rough experience...
It is difficult to socialize as well since there is no Voice chat, and you can't use text chat unless its pre/post game. This can lead to a lot of frustration, confusion, misplays/miscommunications, and general lack of social interaction since you can't talk/text like 90% of the time. And even then - console players cannot see the pregame/postgame lobby text chat for some reason.
It is difficult to interact in any real conventional ways you'd expect from most online games. But, if you manage to find some cool people ping-ponging through lobbies, it ain't all bad of course! Just, this game like I said can be a mixed bag, and it honestly feels restrictive in terms of socializing and communicating, comparatively speaking to other games! If you join a discord or some other social site/app that fosters communities, then i'm certain you can find plenty of friendly folks to join up with though and the game is much, much more fun with friends you could bring along..! but - that can be said with about any game tbh!
Also I really like to visit twitch streamers after a match and introduce myself as the killer they just played and just hang out for a bit
EDIT: also I keep running into the same guy who calls himself ‘Wesker’s Foot Massager’ when playing survivor and don’t know how to feel about that. Through pure luck I ended up against him as I was playing Wesker and that match got real weird real fast
It also doesn’t help that the community is super toxic at times and will use any excuse to troll you in pre-game or postgame chat, so thats something to bear in mind.
I wouldn’t recommend the game to new players in its current state, but there are some really nice people on here too.
Plus a lot of the free characters are cheaper so you wouldn't need to do as much grinding now days for shards.
If this game interest you, you can get it during a sale, the base game isn't even that expensive on steam during season sales. And if you rather just get some insight, feel free to watch a dbd stream, there's plenty of streamers playing dbd daily.
DBD base game is pretty much always on 60% sale. All non-licensed killers and survivors can be purchased with the game currency.
Just play the base game, of course you won't have the 'meta' perks but you'll still be learnign the game anyways. play with the base game killers.
Afterwards, if you want to mostly play survivor, you want the Escape Expansion Pack; get it at 40% off which comes with 12 survivors. If you play kilers get the Terror Expansion Pack at 40% off with 11 killers. This will give you plenty of different characters and perks to play with.
Licensed characters can only be purchased with real money. again most of them (except newer dlcs) usuallly go for 50% sale.
If you're planning on playing survivor you should be good as a "free" account. All the perks are useless anyways. Maybe just unlock Kate for her Windows of Opportunity to get a basic feel for pallets/windows.
If you're going to main a killer however you're gonna need a few DLCs depending on the meta.
