For some reason some of the screams are ear splittingly piercing.

I know how to shut them up when I hook them. How do I stop my character from screaming when getting placed on hook? I guess muting the game would help but holy ♥♥♥♥ they need to tone it down a bit..

Unfortunately you can't.

BHVR won't change this for some reason even though it's the one thing survivor and killer mains agree on.

There needs to be an option to turn this off or turn the volume on it way down.

I doubt it helps much - but I think one trick I've seen is that if you immediately m1/hit the survivor on hook, it'll cut off their scream, if I recall correctly.

But I know that can be construed as an unfriendly gesture probably. I know it wastes a couple extra seconds too.

Like others have mentioned, I am pretty sure you can alt-tab or minimize the game super quick to kill the noise as well. I've seen some people bind a mute key to their keyboard so they just tap the 'mute' button instead.

you can hit escape to go into the menu and it lowers the sound

If you mean the scream on hook, just smack them as soon as you can. It'll stop the scream and most people playing the game understand you aren't being rude or salty.
